360brainbody is so proud to introduce Erin!

Erin grew up in Lethbridge, Alberta where she competed as a national stream gymnast and then as part of the varsity track and field team at the University of Lethbridge. There she graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science and went on to complete her Master of Science in Physical Therapy at the University of Alberta. Since graduating in 2009, Erin has completed additional training in acupuncture, dry needling (Gunn IMS), manual therapy, spinal manipulation and hip rehabilitation. Erin has worked primarily in a private practice setting, treating sport injuries, repetitive use injuries, motor vehicle accident injuries and more. She believes in the importance of fully understanding her patients’ concerns and goals in order to develop a successful treatment plan unique to each person. Through sport and injuries of her own, Erin has recognized the importance of activity specific treatments as well as injury prevention. Erin has a passion for learning and continues to further her education in order to elevate her practice. When not working, Erin enjoys staying active, travelling, and spending time with her husband and 3 daughters.

Our physios at 360 were and still are such impressive movers before they became Physio’s.

Martial 👩🏼‍🎨 artist, gymnastics 🤸‍♀️, volleyball, alpine⛷, rugby 🏉 , dance 💃🏼 they clearly had tons physical literacy and movement experience before they entered the medical world. They also had there share of injuries and were treated by Physio’s.

Now of course we offer all the things they learned in school.📚

-Dry needling
-Orthopaedic and Manual therapy
--Spinal manipulation
-Hip rehabilitation
-Post Surgical Care
-Taping
-Clinical Pilates

And more.

We think it’s pretty darn important to have a experienced mover teach movement.

A quote from our martial Arts mover Physio,
“When you have pain, it isn’t a reason to stop moving , but a reason to move smarter”

Book in now with one of our movers and Groovers. 😜

Do you know according to the World Health Organization , by implementing inter professional collaboration and learning to work together and respecting one another’s perspective in healthcare, multiple disciplines can work more effectively as a team to help improve patient outcomes. 🤔

Good news 360 knew this a long time ago. 🤣

We also know that there are multiple ways to move.

Dancing,Martial Arts, Sports, Pilates, Yoga, Feldenkrais, Gym, Fitness, and about a million others types.

We don’t believe there is one way to look at the body. Or one way to move the body.

We believe in YOUR ability to to move. We also believe in YOUR ability to help your mind.

We believe in OUR ability to help YOU reach your full human potential, but let’s be honest its really up to you.

We treat the whole person, not just the parts.

One of the reasons why 360 opened our doors, is we are very passionate and appreciative of the Art of movement.

What does Art of movement mean? Example:

Dance is a art form in which human movement becomes the medium for sensing, understanding, and communicating ideas, feelings, and experiences.

That pretty cool that movement can do all that.

Book in now and learn about how movement can help you reach your full human potential.

We treat the whole person not just the parts!

OK, be honest, how much independent mental health training do you/we do? Generally, we do not start our mental health training as a young person, but we start sports and training for sport at a young age. Many things are different now in the high-performance athlete and sports world compared to even 10-20 years ago.

Here are a few examples that are top of mind for us:

Social media presence on and off the field/rink, ie: no downtime or separation from the sport and athlete persona.
Money parents or the athlete has to spend to be a high performance, professional or amateur athlete
Parents have less trust in a coach’s development of character and ability, ie: constantly micro-managing, questioning, monitoring etc.

-Increased number of young athletes identified as talented get pulled out of community sports to be with same physiques and ability on “elite” teams so no cross-training and potentially less well-rounded athlete.
Where’s the fun? Fun has been taken out of sport because there is too much money, time, hidden agendas and expectations.

We can’t change how evolution and science, or outside distractions will play out. What we can do is identify that we need more brain training and skills for our athletes and their mental health. Training that starts at a young age, or any age really, to become a lifelong habit.

Athletes need to understand WHO they are. Athletes have been told for years that they are “high performance”, “elite”, “talented”, “special”, “figure skater”, “hockey player”, “gymnast”, and these are just words and labels. They have been told repeatedly to the athlete until this is all they know of themselves and really, these labels are not that important.
We’ll help you realize that while making your dreams come true it doesn’t have to be at the high cost of your mental health; it is possible to live your dreams as an athlete AND maintain a healthy mind-body-spirit connection. Handling the hard things, being resilient, and thriving in it. We know it’s hard or everyone would do it.

07/06/2022

360-Why is it dangerous to use labels when training a high performance athlete?

Sri -

Labels reinforce the ‘Athlete Identity’ (or the Ego). In university, if people asked James who he was and what he did, his response was always the same: ‘I’m the star basketball player for the Dinos.” Every human is a complex individual. We have multiple attributes that include our physical, emotional, mental, and social make-ups. Labeling can quickly degenerate into stereotyping. In addition to the competitive spirit, Sports should be about fun, inclusivity, and development. If coaches and teachers label the athlete as ‘talented,’ ‘fast,’ ‘lazy,’ ‘stupid,’ or ‘clever,’ they risk hindering their growth and development.

We treat the whole person, not just the parts to reach full human potential.

Let’s talk about the elephant in the room.🐘❤️

07/04/2022

What happens to an athlete Identity after years of doing high performance sport?

The world of an athlete is definitely challenging. The average athlete will spend between 800 to 1,500 hours per year on their sport. In many instances, this leads to something called an “Athlete Identity” - a person is always introduced as, “James, the star basketball player”. When the Athlete Identity is no longer in balance and becomes the main identity, everything begins to be seen through the lens of that identity. This can create huge struggles for someone, especially when their athletic career is cut short (due to injury or other reasons) or when they retire. When Athlete Identity is the only identity and it gets ripped away, people are often left to wonder, “Who am I?” “What can I possibly contribute or do now?” and “I provide nothing anymore.”. This understandably leads to many mental health issues and difficulties for that person as they have to find some value in themself beyond athletics and some way to matter and contribute again.

The sense of “identity” is referred to as “Ego”- this ‘ego’ is like a shell that covers our true nature (just like seed is covered by a shell- it needs to break open from the shell to sprout and bloom). Ego is getting stuck with any one identity. Ego is an impediment for a leader, wise man, merchant or a service provider, but it is a necessity for an athlete, a competitor. An athlete is one who takes on challenges and commitment and stands by it. But once the challenge is accomplished (i.e., game is over), the athlete's ego needs to dissolve and allow other identities to flourish. A simple way to counter ego is to ‘be natural’; rather, it is being like a child ..just be like a child.

SKY breathing and meditation brings deep rest and brings the awareness of who you are. Then there is no room for ego.

We treat the whole person, not just the parts. To reach full human potential.
