🍂📚 The Leaf Thief is a wonderful fall read that also supports early language skills! Here’s how:

Vocabulary Growth: Children are introduced to seasonal and nature-based words (leaf, autumn, squirrel, tree). Connecting vocabulary to real-life experiences helps them retain and use these words in everyday conversations.

Repetitive Phrases: The story’s repeated structure gives children chances to anticipate, join in, and practice language patterns. This supports recall, confidence, and fluency.

Story Retelling & Sequencing: With a clear beginning, middle, and end, this book makes it easy for children to practice retelling. It’s also a great way to model sequencing words like first, then, next, finally.

Question Practice: The storyline naturally prompts “wh” questions (Who took the leaf? What happened next?), which encourage children to build comprehension, expand sentence structure, and express their ideas.

Perspective Taking: Children can compare what they know about autumn (that leaves fall naturally) with what the squirrel thinks. This invites critical thinking and helps them understand different viewpoints.

✨ A funny, engaging story that brings both laughter and learning, perfect for fall story time! 🍁

🤝 As an SLP, I often collaborate with Occupational Therapists (OTs) to support children’s growth and development.

Many people hear “occupation” and think of jobs—but for children, their most important “jobs” are to play and to learn! 🎨📚

So how can an OT help your child? 🌟
OTs can support:
✨ Toileting, dressing, eating, grooming, and sleeping
✨ Fine motor skills & core strength
✨ Sensory processing & emotional regulation
✨ Social-emotional learning & play
✨ Adaptive equipment & executive functioning

Truly, OTs are the jack of all trades and often the glue that holds a multidisciplinary team together. If your child is struggling with any daily activities, OT support can make a big difference! 💡

Hi all! I wanted to put out a reminder to fill out our parent survey!

As a neurodiversity-affirming SLP, I know how hard it is to find accessible, practical support when you need it most. That’s why I’m creating new ways to support parents, like workshops, small groups, and 1:1 consults.

You can help shape these offerings by filling out a quick survey, so we can build something that’s truly helpful for you.

The first days of school are just the beginning and the transition takes time! 🌱

Many children need extra support to feel confident and comfortable in their new routine.

Keeping routines consistent, reading books about school, inviting school-themed play, and building in downtime all help.

Celebrate each small step! 🎉 Every drop-off managed, new friend made, or classroom routine remembered is a big win.

With patience, predictability, and encouragement, your child will continue to grow into their school days with confidence.

When advocating for your child, it may be helpful to ask about what supports may already be in place! Writing down key points or gaps in support may be helpful.

After the meeting, you may want to follow up kindly, but clearly, with a short thank-you email. This way you can highlight what was agreed on, create clarity, a paper trail, and show you value the teacher’s time. 📧

💛 Remember: you know your child best. When your insight combines with a teacher’s expertise, you can build the kind of learning environment where your child truly thrives.

The first weeks of school are done, and many parents are preparing to meet with teachers about their child’s needs.
These conversations can feel big, especially for parents of neurodivergent children.

Go in with a team mindset 🤝, share your child’s strengths 🌟, be specific about challenges 🎯, and bring suggestions 💡

Approaching the meeting with collaboration, positivity, and concrete examples helps teachers better understand and support your child.

💬 “How was your day?” can feel like a HUGE question for children! Instead, try asking smaller, specific questions, giving choices, or using pictures/notes from the teacher to spark conversation. 🖼️✨

The goal isn’t a perfect answer, it’s building a routine where your child feels confident sharing, even if it’s just one word. 💛

✨ Back-to-School Goodbyes ✨
The first days of school can feel BIG for little ones and parents. 💛

Here are some simple ways to make drop-offs a little smoother:
👋 Create a predictable goodbye ritual (hug, high five, or silly rhyme)
🎭 Act it out in play so your child knows what to expect
📸 Use visuals like a family photo for comfort
💬 Name and validate feelings: “It’s hard to say goodbye, I’ll miss you too”
🌟 Model confidence, kids take cues from us!

Remember: separation is a skill, and with time and practice, it gets easier. 💪💛

✨ Tomorrow is the first day of school! ✨

I’m excited to kick off another year supporting students’ voices, stories, and growth. 💬📚 From building vocabulary to boosting confidence, I can’t wait to see the progress we’ll make together this year. 💛

Here’s to a school year full of communication, connection, and celebration of every child’s unique strengths! 🌟

✏️ Back-to-school jitters? School’s First Day of School by Adam Rex is one of my new favourites for families this time of year! 💛

Told from the perspective of the school itself, this story makes kids laugh while opening the door to important conversations about feelings, routines, and new experiences.

This is a great book because it’s packed with opportunities to:
💬 Build feelings vocabulary
🔄 Practice sequencing (first, next, last)
🧠 Strengthen retelling and predicting skills
👀 Encourage perspective-taking

It’s the perfect mix of fun + language learning and a great way to ease first day nerves. 📚✨
