VETERAN | Silvera is home to many veterans, including the oldest living Second World War veteran in Alberta. Our thanks to CTV, the Calgary Herald and CityNews for paying us a visit yesterday to cover the story of Bill Wright. Bill is 106 years old and lives at Silvera’s Aspen community. He enlisted in 1940, served in the Canadian Air Force and has lived a full life. We are grateful to all veterans for their service and their willingness to share their experiences. To view the CityNews interview with Bill at yesterday’s Remembrance Day ceremony at Aspen Commons, visit - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89GCppQUruk

This Remembrance Day, we honour Bill Wright, a 106-year-old Silvera resident whose life embodies courage, resilience, and dedication.

Raised on a Saskatchewan farm during the Dirty Thirties, Bill enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force at 21, serving as a Sergeant and supporting the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan in Manitoba. He managed supplies for his base and earned respect for his leadership and discipline. Beyond his duties, he brought pride to his unit as a track and field champion.

After the war, Bill returned to build a full life rooted in hard work, family, and community. His story reminds us that service takes many forms — from defending a nation to leading with kindness and gratitude in everyday life.

Today, we remember and thank veterans like Bill who remind us what it means to serve. ❤️

VIVIFRAIL | Residents in three Silvera communities recently took part in a study aimed at reducing the risk of falls among seniors. Led by Assistant Professor Jeremy Wong and student Michael Messier from the University of Calgary’s Biomedical Engineering faculty, the research team is exploring how affordable computer vision technology can be used to assess fall risk in older adults. CATS | Bow Valley and Spruce Commons residents recently spent a morning at the Regal Cat Cafe in Kensington. The group enjoyed warm drinks and snacks from the cafe, cozy chats and plenty of cuddles from the cafe's friendly feline residents. The cats were just as happy to meet everyone - lots of purring, walker rides and smiles all around!

Residents discovered the country’s captivating contrasts - from high-altitude cities to dramatic landscapes, and from the vast Salar de Uyuni to the breathtaking peaks of Illimani. We also savoured the vibrant flavours of this South American gem. This experience perfectly showed how our community connects with the world through food, fun and learning.

Since moving in with Silvera in 2023, Janet has been an encourager, a storyteller, and a friend to many. Her life journey spans Minnesota to Papua New Guinea, the Philippines, Australia, Dallas, and now Calgary. An author of Holding on to Hope—a collection of 38 inspiring stories—Janet’s writing has touched lives across the globe, even reuniting families and supporting orphaned girls in India.
