Every year, teachers feel the pressure to “get ahead” with curriculum in the first week of school. But the truth is: if students don’t feel like they belong, they won’t truly learn.
Belonging first → Learning second.
When we invest those first days in building community, we aren’t “losing time”—we’re creating the conditions for everything else to succeed.

✅ Less behavior issues
✅ More trust and participation
✅ A classroom where students feel safe enough to take risks and grow

This year, I’m encouraging teachers to slow down and connect before diving into content. The academics will come—and they’ll come more easily when relationships are strong.

Here are 5 ways to do that on the blog this week:

This was the front cover of Maclean’s Magazine 11 years ago.

And here we are today, with the same call back to bravely connected communities where we feel rooted. Community and connection not only can’t be ignored as a need - it is crucial in our world that is changing.
Political landscapes have changed.
Our economy has changed.
Technology has changed.
Our ability to have mental health has changed.

Feeling rooted in belonging in community is what will ground us through the ever changing world we are living in.

What are your thoughts? Do you believe community connection is a necessity? Why?

We are back with the biggest back to school clothing giveaway we’ve had to date! If you have clothes you would like to donate (men’s, women’s, kids) let me know! These clothing giveaways help tons of people in our community! Last year we had almost 400 people.

This is all the work of our amazing Dorothy Wutzke 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

If you’re someone who would like to volunteer, she is setting up all this week 9:30am-3pm at the Hub 2385 74th Ave SE
A great opportunity for you, your family, or your teen to get involved 🌟🌟

Half the town of Denare Beach, Saskatchewan burned down.
Families returned from evacuation to find… nothing left.

We sifted through ashes looking for anything they could hold onto.
We stood beside them in silence, because sometimes there are no words.

And I was reminded:
💡 Community doesn’t start in an office or with a plan.
💡 It’s not a project — it’s people.
💡 Home is more than a building — it’s the people who help you rebuild.

We can’t wait until disaster strikes to connect with our neighbours.
Belonging creates resilience. And when the fire comes — literal or not — no one should walk through it alone.

❤️ Be the neighbour who shows up.

I took a poll on my insta story asking, “Have you ever been burned by community?” 91% said yes. When I asked what was challenging people said:

🍃cliques
🍃needing to conform to be accepted
🍃being labelled “toxic” instead of being invited into friendship that heals
🍃broken trust
🍃conflict and unkind words
🍃being labelled
🍃feeling used

Do you relate with any of these? Anything you would add?

Community is so messy. It’s the one thing that can break our heart, but it’s also the one thing that makes us BRAVE when it’s safe.

“If you feel safe and loved, your brain becomes specialized in exploration, play, and cooperation. If you are frightened and unwanted it becomes specialized in managing feelings, fear, and abandonment.” book

These pictures reminds me what supportive community does. It empowers.

It’s time to create a community that brings out people’s BRAVE🙌🏻
