For hundreds of years, wearing black to a funeral has been a standard practice not only to signify the passing of a loved one but as a sign of respect to those who are grieving.

In western culture, this is the traditional way to dress when attending a funeral.

While there is no explicit dress code for funerals, there are some things you should avoid wearing:

➡ Activewear or athleisure. This is simply far too casual for a ceremony of this magnitude.
➡ Super revealing clothing is typically frowned upon and in many cases may come across as disrespectful to the family.
➡ You should also avoid anything too flashy or glittery!

When in doubt go with something as conservative as possible. The bottom line is to show respect to the family and their loved ones and your wardrobe choices should reflect that.

Pre-payment saves you money by protecting you from inflation and price changes.

Pre-paying also provides peace of mind for your family, who won’t have to figure out your funeral expenses when the time comes. An added benefit is that these funds remain outside the estate, which eliminates taxation and makes things easier for your Executor who is responsible for the payment of your funeral otherwise.

Monthly, semi-annual or yearly payment plans are available to suit any budget.

One of Country Hills Crematorium’s Pre-planning Counselors or one of our Funeral Directors would be pleased to offer you more information on any of our Pre-planning products.

A eulogy is a speech given at a funeral service in memory of the deceased. It is an opportunity to celebrate the life of the person who has passed away, and to share memories with others who are grieving.

First, know your audience. Are you speaking to close family and friends who knew the deceased well, or a larger group of acquaintances who are paying their respects?

A eulogy is an opportunity to give a glimpse into the life of your loved one. It should only be about 5-10 minutes long.

When it comes to your eulogy, try to focus on talking about what made the person special. Reflect on some of the things that made your loved one unique

Lastly, practice your eulogy before reading it aloud to an audience.

Writing and delivering a eulogy can be both an honour and a challenge. At Country Hills Crematorium, we want you help you feel prepared, calm, and clear. We hope that by following these tips, you can confidently write and deliver a eulogy that will be both meaningful for you and your audience.

The process of planning a funeral is typically perceived as being only for those whom we have lost. However, there are a couple of major benefits to thinking about these things well in advance.

While it may be morbid and at times hard to think about this, doing so can save your loved ones and yourself a lot of added stress and even money.

With increasing inflation costs, funerals have become even more expensive. By preplanning your funeral you can avoid added inflation costs, which can add up very quickly, especially in these times.

Preplanning your funeral also alleviates the stress on your loved ones. Instead of feeling as if they aren't meeting your final wishes, they can simply celebrate your life and relish the amazing memories you had together.

Life is short and unpredictable and while talking about things like this may not be the most positive, doing so can definitely make a massive impact on those who love you most.

Funerals and the time immediately following the loss of a loved one can be very hard. And as such, emotions tend to play a very important role in the planning of a funeral or celebration of life, especially if your loved one did not already have their wishes in place.

Emotional overspend is defined as the purchase of something you may not need due to the heavy presence of feelings. This happens a lot during major life events, especially after the death of a loved one.

While an extravagant and lavish funeral may be nice, it doesn't have to be the only way of planning a final celebration for your loved one. Doing so, against the wishes of your loved one is an example of emotional overspending.

However, you should be conscious of the fact that while your emotions play a major role in your decision-making process, it's not a bad thing to want to invest money into an event aimed at honouring your loved one.

Just know that there are options for all budgets and you don't HAVE to plan an overly lavish funeral.

Losing a loved one is painfully difficult.

Many opt to remember their loved ones with a keepsake. Sometimes this is a piece of jewelry that your loved one also cherished, or it's a newly designed keepsake that encompasses aspects of your loved one in the design.

Either way, you should choose something that brings you joy. A meaningful one reminds you of the love and memories you shared while being able to hold them close. Choosing a keepsake is a very personable experience, and is a choice you will need to make on your own!

We can guide you through your options but at the end of the day, we want you to find joy in remembering your loved ones.

That's the most important note about picking a meaningful keepsake 🤍
