POCUS in Practice → Feline Foreign Body

A 6-month-old F DSH with a history of vomiting after every meal. Patient has been keeping down water and is urinating. On physical exam, this patient has a very enlarged cranial abdomen which is not tense. The veterinarian can palpate gas in the stomach/upper GI but does not appreciate any discomfort when palpating.

The owner agrees to blood work and an abdominal POCUS while the labs are running.

This still pic below is a good scan of a patient with a full stomach. You can observe the foodstuff throughout the lumen.

Based on the history and information obtained from the POCUS scan and radiographs, it was determined that this patient had a foreign body. This patient was taken to surgery where a small piece of a rubber toy was found. She recovered uneventfully.

POCUS in Practice: Foxtails

A 3 year old male neutered French Bulldog presented with lameness in the left rear leg. On physical exam, there was pain, swelling of the plantar tarsus and purulent exudate oozing from an open wound. This patient lived in an area where foxtails are common so a soft tissue ultrasound using MSK setting was performed.

A four-year-old male Cocker Spaniel patient presents with a normal left adrenal. See it for yourself in the scan below!

The left adrenal gland is located caudal to the celiac and cranial mesenteric arteries, and cranial to the left renal artery.

The position of the left adrenal is near the cranial pole of left kidney.

The left adrenal is peanut shaped but enlarged at both the cranial and caudal poles.
