After 20 years with foot pain, visits to multiple doctors and expensive orthotics; one tip from Bonavista PT for a $35 dollar orthotic and some foot exercises the pain is gone. THANK YOU!
Have had and are continuing to have great care for my mom after she broke her kneecap. All the staff are friendly and helpful.
Audrey helped me with my neck issue and was not satisfied with my progress after 5 visits so she sent me for xrays which revealed a degenerative condition and recommended I see my doctor. She was very knowledgeable and professional and I would recommend her to anyone.

Calgary Physical & Massage Therapy Clinic Bonavista Physical Therapy has a highly experienced team of skilled therapists able to assess and treat your musculoskeletal injuries or conditions.

Operating as usual

So much snow today YYC!! Please be careful shoveling - it’s really heavy. Take breaks, try and push rather than lift and lean back a few times to offset all the forward bending. If you have an appointment today and don’t feel like going out, change it to virtual! We are happy to see you on-line 😌

Here is a simple but very effective exercise you can do at home to strengthen your hips, knees, back, gluteal muscles and core! Work it into your day to start getting stronger. Progress your way up to 30 reps and then add weight or stagger your feet. Remember - everything helps and it all counts. Something is better than nothing.

Wow!! Physiotherapy Alberta commercial played during the news!!!

Welcome Yogesh Chopra MPT, Dip OMTP to Bonavista Physical Therapy! Yogi brings a wealth of experience to our clinic and we are so excited that he has joined the team. Yogi has 9 years of experience treating spine and a variety of musculoskeletal injuries including scoliosis. He has managed and mentored young therapists in a large PT company and is an excellent diagnostician due to extensive post-graduate training and a commitment to life-long learning. Currently Yogi is waiting to write his Certification exam in Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy and since Bonavista Physio is the only MDT Clinic in Alberta - what a great environment to hone his skills. In addition to English, Yogi speaks Hindi and Punjabi, and enjoys listening to music, singing, driving, and playing cricket! He and his wife love everything about Calgary except for the cold!!

Physiotherapy remans open! We continue to adhere to strict infection and prevention control guidelines to keep you and our team safe. We can see you in-person or on-line so you don't have to put your injury on hold. Waiting too long to get treated can result in developing secondary problems, turn into a chronic condition and make it harder to treat. Don't put your health on hold! We can get you on the road to recovery. We have openings this week including Saturday morning. Your extended health benefits do not renew! Get started before year-end

Did you know that 40% of patients referred to an orthopaedic specialist for their hip or knee have not tried conservative care? Regardless of age, if you have ANY hip or knee pain you will benefit from education and exercise. Why put up with pain for months waiting to see a specialist? PLUS - the specialist is likely to refer you to physiotherapy anyway!! Get started with physiotherapy ASAP. Even "bone on bone" arthritis responds to appropriate exercise and movement.

Bonavista Physio uses MDT (Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy). MDT is an extremely reliable assessment method whereby both the patient and the therapist learn which postures, exercises or loading techniques alleviate symptoms. The patient can use these techniques at home to “self treat” leading to a faster recovery with fewer visits to physiotherapy required.

Skiers thumb or Gamekeepers thumb

In Scottish gamekeepers, ligament damage in the MCP joint happened because the ligament stretched out after the gamekeepers repeated the same action over and over. Today, most cases of ligament damage in the MCP joint are caused from sports injuries. Now doctors tend to refer to the condition as skier's thumb, since it happens so often in downhill ski accidents.
Any extreme force that pulls the thumb away from the palm of the hand can damage the ligaments. The most common way for this to happen is to fall on your hand with your thumb stretched out. When a skier falls down while holding a ski pole, the thumb may get bent out and back, leading to an injury in the ulnar collateral ligament of the thumb. For a serious sprain your thumb will need to be immobilized for a period of time to allow the ligament to heal. Following this, physiotherapy will be needed to regain strength, mobility and function in the hand and thumb. The entire process may take 6-12 weeks depending on the severity of injury.

LOW BACK PAIN?
Research has shown that staying active helps to provide pain relief and maintain function. If you are not sure which activities are safe for you, seek advice from a physiotherapist. Our physiotherapists have extensive post graduate training in MDT (Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy) and will be able to diagnose your type of back pain, educate you on the causes and aggravating/easing factors as well as provide a prognosis for your recovery.
Your therapist will help to alleviate any fears and anxiety you might experience regarding your pain and reassure you that it is safe to move and be active. You can expect to be given some specific exercises, movements, or postures that will help reduce the mechanical strain on your tissues and promote healing.
At our clinic most patients start noticing decreased pain and increased mobility after the first visit. Our goal is that improvements should be evident by the third visit. Treatments for LBP focus on movement and exercise but may also include: core exercises, ergonomic, lifting and lifestyle advice, or manual therapy. The focus is to get you moving comfortably again and be able to self-treat for the long-term. If we do our job well, you need us less over time, not more. We are confident in the effectiveness of our approach and have measured our patient outcomes against international standards.

Should I get diagnostic imaging to "see what is wrong" before going to physiotherapy? Short answer: NO

A mechanic does not figure out what is wrong with a car by taking a picture of the engine, and a physiotherapist also does not depend on a picture (i.e. X-Ray, CT, MRI) to figure out what is wrong with your back. These diagnostic tests are one piece of the puzzle, but they are static and not as helpful as many believe them to be when diagnosing a problem that has to do with movement. Moreover, these tests do not alleviate your pain, they expose you to potentially harmful radiation and may lead to unnecessary treatment.
Research shows that findings on an MRI do not correlate well with back pain severity or the need for treatment. Many "abnormalities" are found in healthy people with no history of back pain, meaning these tests are not very useful to identify the cause of back pain. Unless we are trying to rule out a serious pathology, diagnostic imaging does not help guide treatment, improve your care or outcomes, and is not recommended.

“Yes, sitting is much better now, I can sit for a period of time and get up without issue, and have had no issues getting in and out of our car. I am straighter when I look in the mirror :)”
This from a patient who was in so much back pain a week ago that he could barely walk let alone get in the car to come to Physiotherapy. Instead I treated him virtually. He liked it so much he wanted to continue this way even when he was able to sit again.
3 sessions.

This exercise looks easy but there are many components to it. Balance, core and back strength, hip and knee strength and stability. All in one! Have you ever seen a person who’s upper body tips side to side while walking? They usually have hip weakness. They may have to start this exercise with no band. You should be able to maintain perfect stability while pulling. If not - keep trying! Did you know that balance can improve through exercise??

My first patient had a family member being tested for COVID-19 but didn’t want to miss out on her appointment so we just switched to an online session! She was thrilled and can now progress her exercises as she is further along in her healing. Virtual is a great option if you live far away, if you want to limit contact, if the roads are bad or if someone in your house is feeling ill 😷

Today we are highlighting a brilliant and amazing physiotherapist: Cristiane Yamabayachi! Cristiane has worked with us part time for over a year and holds a Physiotherapy degree from Brazil and a Doctoral degree from Japan. She has 20 years of combined clinical and research experience. She has worked in different fields including cardiorespiratory and neurology, but after struggling with a chronic injury herself she came across the Mckenzie Method that not only improved her condition but provided her with tools to self-manage it. Since then Cristiane has completed all four courses on the Mckenzie Method and is working towards the certification. She has taken a number of courses since graduation including courses in Manual Therapy and Dry Needling. Cristiane is also a trained Vestibular Physiotherapist, and also works at the Neurovestibular Clinic at the South Health Campus. Cristiane believes in an exercise-based approach to physiotherapy. She strives to continuously advance her learning and to work with each of her patients to achieve their rehab goals while engaging them to play an active role in recovery and health maintenance. Cristiane speaks Portugese, a bit of Japanese and of course English!

We are so excited to welcome our newest team member and physiotherapist, Saniya!!
Saniya completed the Masters of Science in Physical Therapy program in 2013 from the University of Toronto. She relocated from Ontario in 2019, and brought a variety of clinical experience from both the private clinic and hospital rehabilitation settings. Along with practicing acupuncture, dry needling, cupping therapy and taping, Saniya utilizes the McKenzie Method of Diagnosis and Treatment to assess and treat mechanical pain. She can also help people with dizziness, balance issues, vertigo and post-concussion syndrome, having been trained in Vestibular Rehabilitation and Concussion Care.
In conjunction with her hands-on skills, Saniya believes in empowering patients in their own recovery through education and exercise therapy.
When she isn’t busy researching new treatment techniques, Saniya enjoys traveling, staying active and spending time with her family (including her little shih tzu).

So excited that Julian Quaglia MPT has joined our team!
Julian earned his Honours Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology in 2016 at McMaster University while volunteering as a Student Clinical Therapist and Strength and Conditioning Coach with the varsity basketball and football teams. He completed his Masters of Physiotherapy program at Western University in 2019.
Julian’s clinical approach prioritizes exercise, load management, and client empowerment. His treatment philosophy revolves around finding ways to keep you doing what you love, staying active through the rehab process, and making sure you’re involved every step of the way. Julian is particularly interested in the complexity of pain and understands that you are not your diagnosis.
Julian is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist. In addition to working with various club and varsity teams, he has worked extensively as a personal trainer. You can find him at the gym every morning, lifting weights or shooting hoops. Music is a cornerstone of his life, and you’ll never catch him without a good book on the go.

This technique works so well if press ups reduce your back pain - but not fully. Get a family member to use a towel across the low back to add a bit more pressure so you can get deeper into the stretch. The key is to make sure you feel better after! If you want access to highly trained MDT therapists we can assess and treat via telehealth anywhere in Alberta.
