September is ITP Awareness Month
On Friday, September 30th, sport purple for Platelets Day
Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a blood disorder characterized by a decrease in the number of platelets in the blood. A decrease in platelets can cause easy bruising, bleeding gums, and internal bleeding. There are two forms of ITP:
• Acute thrombocytopenic purpura which usually affects children aged 2 to 6 year's old.
• Chronic thrombocytopenic purpura which can affect any age.
Causes of ITP can include:
• Medications causing an allergy that cross-reacts with platelets
• Infections
• Pregnancy
• Immune Disorders
• Low-grade lymphomas and leukemias
