If you’ve had braces or have braces right now, you might be worried about your wisdom teeth coming in.

Do orthodontists look at wisdom teeth?

Usually, your dentist or orthodontist will know beforehand that your third molars are close to eruption, determine if there's enough space for their eruption, and recommend tooth extractions whenever necessary to avoid these additional complications.

Can wisdom teeth mess up teeth alignment?

Wisdom Teeth Can Mess Up a Teen's Smile Alignment
For people who have already had orthodontic treatment, wisdom teeth pushing at their roots can be a catastrophe waiting to happen. The constant pressure on adjacent teeth can cause the entire bite to shift, throwing off individual teeth and overall smile alignment.

Will my teeth shift back after wisdom teeth removal?

Does Tooth Alignment Change After Having Your Wisdom Tooth

For example, once the wisdom teeth are removed, there is more space in your mouth. As such, your teeth may move slightly due to the fact that there is no more pressure exerted on them by the wisdom teeth. However, your teeth will not drastically shift to the point that they create large gaps and spaces in between.

MYTHS ABOUT BRACES YOU SHOULD PROBABLY KNOW

1. Braces will set off the metal detector.

As told to me by a TSA agent, “That’s not the kind of metal we’re looking for.” You can go through any metal detector and it is very unlikely that your braces will set it off.

2. Your braces will rust.

Metal and water means rust, right? Not the kind of metal used to make your braces. Made with titanium alloy, your braces are not going to rust, whether you wear them for six months or three years.

3. Braces interfere with radio signals.

The type of metal used to make your braces might look like what your radio’s antenna is made out of, but your braces are not going to conduct radio signals (though, to be honest, it would be kind of cool if they did).

4. Braces will make it impossible to play my instrument.

Speaking from experience, as someone who played saxophone for two years while wearing braces, it is possible to play your instrument while wearing braces. There will be an adjustment period, but it is perfectly possible.

5. If I kiss someone wearing braces, my braces could get locked with theirs.

This is a common gag on television shows for people wearing braces, but the truth is that this is pretty much impossible. Today’s braces are sleek and smaller. It’s very unlikely they’ll get caught with anyone else’s.

Sugar Basics

While sugar makes food taste great, it can cause serious tooth decay. Bacteria, or sometimes called “sugar bugs,” love sugar just as much as we do! These bugs feed on sugar and produce plaque and acid, which jeopardizes the integrity of tooth enamel.

There are typically 10-12 teaspoons of sugar in just one can of soda.

Between 60-90% of children will experience tooth decay.
While tooth enamel is the hardest substance in your body, bacteria can damage it.

Should you keep your toothbrush near the toilet?

NEVER EVER EVER

Water splashes all around when you flush the toilet, including on your toothbrush. So you really need to keep your toothbrush away from the toilet, so that bacterial infection doesn't reach you this way.

Keep your toothbrush holder away from the toilet and sink. Did you know that flushing the toilet can create an aerosol effect, spraying germs through the air? Shutting the toilet lid can help, but keeping toothbrushes as far away from the toilet as possible can reduce the amount of bacteria that may land on them.

Is toothbrush dirtier than toilet?

There are 10 million bacteria on every single toothbrush

A recent study by the University of Manchester showed that toothbrushes can accumulate more than 10 million bacteria, which is more than the bacteria found in a toilet seat (50 per square inch) or in a public lavatory floor (2 million per square inch)

Where should I keep my toothbrush in the bathroom?

Store toothbrush upright, not lying down, either inside of a cabinet or underneath the sink in a closed cabinet. Be sure that air can fully circulate around the brush head so that it can completely air dry, you don't want the bristles to retain any moisture.

AM I TOO OLD FOR BRACES?

Absolutely not!

Whether you’re 8 or 80, it’s the same physiological process that moves teeth through bone. Teeth move in response to forces being placed on them over time. Many orthodontic problems can be corrected as easily for adults as for children/teens. Adults have denser bone tissue than children, so treatment may take a little longer, but age does not keep teeth from moving.

How is adult treatment different?

The biggest difference in orthodontics for adults vs. children/teens is that adults are no longer growing. Adult treatment may take slightly longer than treatment for children/teens with a similar problem due to the maturity and density of the bone adults have.

They may have fillings, missing teeth, misshapen or worn teeth, or other dental disease. Some medications, and habits like smoking, clenching or grinding teeth, or tongue thrust, can affect the outcome of treatment. It’s common for orthodontists to work with a patient’s family dentist to coordinate care. For some adults to reach optimal dental health, the dentist and orthodontist may need to call in other dental specialists such as oral surgeons, periodontists and endodontists.
