When did you become a mother? Was it the day your baby was born? Or did it begin long before that?

I don’t think it matters what stage you’re at on your journey into pregnancy and birth, you’re a mother.

You become a mother the moment you decided to try. You were a mother when month after month you were devastated by the results of that stupid test. You were a mother when you changed your diet... added a few things in and took a few things out. You were a mother when you had to say goodbye too soon and felt guilty about starting again. You were a mother when your belly grew and you tenderly sang songs and rubbed your tummy. You were a mother when you processed all the changes and were anxious about the future. You were a mother when you did all the things for someone you’ve never met. You were a mother when you didn’t think you had it in you for that last final push. You. Were. A. Mother.

You were and have been a mother for a long time. How you loved, cared for and protected your child didn’t start the day they were born, it started the day you became a mother.

How beautiful is this purple cord!!?? It’s a tight space for a baby when they are being born, to ease the journey their blood volume decreases by 1/3. This means a good amount of blood that is meant for baby to have is still in the placenta. It’s not “cord” blood, it’s the babies blood. The blood is full of stem cells, iron and lots of other goodness for baby!
Delaying cord clamping (which was originally started to prevent dripping and staining on sheets) allows all that goodness to get to baby. Wait until the cord is white before it’s cut.
