When did you become a mother? Was it the day your baby was born? Or did it begin long before that?
I don’t think it matters what stage you’re at on your journey into pregnancy and birth, you’re a mother.
You become a mother the moment you decided to try. You were a mother when month after month you were devastated by the results of that stupid test. You were a mother when you changed your diet... added a few things in and took a few things out. You were a mother when you had to say goodbye too soon and felt guilty about starting again. You were a mother when your belly grew and you tenderly sang songs and rubbed your tummy. You were a mother when you processed all the changes and were anxious about the future. You were a mother when you did all the things for someone you’ve never met. You were a mother when you didn’t think you had it in you for that last final push. You. Were. A. Mother.
You were and have been a mother for a long time. How you loved, cared for and protected your child didn’t start the day they were born, it started the day you became a mother.
