Elizabeth McLennan 1 hr · Your friends This is a letter from a doctor to his patients telling them that it impossible for him to continue practicing medicine under Jason Kenny's UCP government in Alberta. Unfortunately, many more patients will be receiving letters like this. I am deeply saddened to see what this government is doing to our medical professionals. We will all suffer because of this. Mark Armstrong 20 hrs · It has been 34 years looking after wonderful patients. The following letter went out on Friday, and some of my patients have already received it... April 2, 2020 To my dear patients, After 34 years of practicing family medicine in this province, I will be retiring in 90 days. Over the course of my practice, I have tried to live up to ideals of dedication, integrity, respect, and compassion. Thank you for the privilege of caring for you through times of illness and vulnerability, from moments of birth to times when loved ones were at their end. I have few regrets, and will be leaving with fond memories of you all. I will grieve the loss of relationships developed over years, and feel profound sadness for what has recently happened and what is yet to come. This letter is especially directed to the 766 of you listed as being on my patient panel, analyzed in the Health Quality Council of Alberta report released last week. (I know there are many others who may not have seen me in the past three years but still consider me their family doctor). Over the past three years, almost half of you received more than 80% of your care from me, with another 42% receiving more than half of their care. 34% of you are more than 65 years old, and 13% are older than 80 years. The report outlines (among other things) that you, my patients, are less likely than the average to have to go to emergency for a non-emergent problem, will have a shorter predicted length of stay when in hospital, and fewer unplanned readmissions (within 30 days) after being discharged from hospital. This despite there being a higher proportion of you with diabetes, hypertension, heart failure, heart disease and asthma when compared to other patient panels within the Edmonton zone. Most of the past 34 years I have been working at the Ermineskin Medical Clinic. Alongside dedicated like-minded associates, I have been working toward the goal of providing the best medical care possible. The above report affirms what we have accomplished this. Unfortunately, the effort that we have invested to build meaningful relationships with patients is not valued by this government. The Government of Alberta has passed a bill enabling them to break their contract with doctors at will. They have made unreasonable demands, and refused to consider alternatives. They have reneged on a negotiated contract, refusing to respect arbitration provisions and imposed restrictive and destructive terms and conditions on the profession. These changes contravene the Canada Health Act, and the amount of disrespect shown to an honourable caring profession is appalling. The new terms (I hesitate to call it a contract) that were imposed April 1, 2020 (withholding full details until March 31, the day before) decimate primary health care and hospital funding. Unreasonable conditions such as requiring family doctors to log beginning and end times of all phone encounters, and refusing to acknowledge or pay for the extra hours needed to complete requirements for sound medical practice strip away all respect for our professionalism. Additionally, they have made severe cuts to nursing staff, and have cut funding to medical imaging, effectively pushing people to buy diagnostic tests for timely diagnosis of cancers and other conditions, something which far too many Albertans cannot afford. And they have done all this at a time when our society is under pandemic assault. All of the above affects me as a doctor and as a citizen. Frankly, this sort of government is not one under which I wish to live. This is not a system which I am willing to work within for the next five to ten years. What can you do? Protest, lobby, educate others, write letters to your MLA, and copy the Minister of Health and the Premier of the province. Would I change my mind if the government reconsidered? Perhaps. But there is no trust left. No good will. Not with this UCP government, headed by Jason Kenney. They have no real understanding how effective Alberta’s medical system formerly was, or the disaster they are going to be leaving Albertans with. We older doctors went through something like this decades ago. Then, I calculated that if I waited long enough, things would get better. This time around? I don’t think I will live long enough to see the damage that is being done repaired. You may ask why am I abandoning my patients, in their time of greatest need, in a letter? I wish that I had the time to let each of you know in person. After years defining my existence through service, we have reached a turning point where the current powers define a doctor’s value with a stop watch. They are measuring our work based on 10 and 15 full minute increments, time stamped, with only direct patient contact (in person or virtually) deemed worthy of compensation. I find this idea soul destroying and not in alignment with my values as your doctor. Until this year, I had planned on continuing to work for the next five to ten years in a job that I truly love, but sadly I am preparing to bid you good bye. I will be working within the system for the next 90 days, and do not know what my future holds. I hope that you can find a young doctor, who will care for you for many decades. “I think it kind of goes along with my philosophy that life is a balance, and also that women should feel completely empowered to do the things in their lives that work for them and make them feel better.

Obviously, I’m very into clean products and clean beauty, but basically, the story goes like this: When I was 40 — I was panicking about turning 40 — I did full anti-wrinkle [injections], the whole thing.

And I [looked like] a monster. It was crazy. I honestly want to show you a picture of my face; it was nuts. I was like, ‘I’ll never do this again.’ ‘I’ll never touch my face again.’ But of course, I went along and I felt good [on the] inside, but maybe you’re noticing more wrinkles.

I was getting really pronounced frown lines.

My really good friend is a plastic surgeon in Chicago, I’m always asking him, ‘What are women doing?’ “Is it to early for a face lift?’ ‘What’s the laser [to use]?’ — and he told me about Xeomin.

He was like, ‘It’s just for right here [Paltrow points to the area between her eyes], and you need just a little drop.’ And I was like, ‘No, I had a really bad experience with an anti-wrinkle injection.’ He said, ‘Just trust me, it’s a purified version.
