[11/16/19]   Why vaccinations are important before becoming pregnant?

Vaccines teach your immune system how to recognize and destroy germs if you are ever exposed to them. They protect you and your baby from certain infections, some of which can cause:
- Birth defects
- Premature birth
- Miscarriage (losing a baby before birth)
- Death.
Vaccinations during pregnancy:
There are 2 types of vaccines:
1. Inactivated vaccines contain whole or parts of killing germs that cannot infect you. Examples include influenza and TdaP (tetanus, diphtheria, and pertussis)
2. Live attenuated vaccines contain bacteria or viruses that are weakened so that they cannot infect you. Examples include varicella and MMR (measles, mumps, and rubella)

Vaccination against influenza (flu) during pregnancy is recommended for all women, especially during flu season (November to April).

Visit Medicure Plus Pharmacy today for any vaccination.

Did you ever have a question that why is Medication Review so Important and why it should be done on a regular basis? Here are our reasons:

A large proportion of patients – especially elderly patients – are prescribed too many medications, typically by different clinicians. In addition, there are over-the-counter medications and natural health products taken by the patients themselves. In most cases, there is no one doctor who has reviewed and coordinated the use of all medications. As a result, patients face potential overtreatment, use of “counteracting” medications, inadequate dosing regimens and adverse drug interactions. To deal with this problem, patients should request a drug review

Medication Review involves a structured and comprehensive assessment of a patient’s medications with the aim of identifying and resolving problems in order to improve health.

Our pharmacists do a comprehensive review of all medications (prescription and non-prescription), educate plan members on their use, and check for appropriateness, safety, and effectiveness

Benefits of Medication Reviews

- Prevent and Manage Adverse Drug Reactions

- Ensure that Medicines are Taken According to Directions

- Improve Drug Treatment Effectiveness and Value

- Improve Pharmacist-Patient Physician Communication

- Identify Additional Clinical Services that May Benefit the Patient

We are offering flu shots to help you stay safe this winter. You can just walk-in for flu shots. No appointments needed (Alberta govt covers the flu shots so it's basically free.)

More about Flu:
Influenza is a viral infection that attacks your respiratory system — your nose, throat, and lungs. Influenza is commonly called flu. For most people, influenza resolves on its own. But sometimes, influenza and its complications can be deadly. Initially, the flu may seem like a common cold with a runny nose, sneezing, and sore throat. But colds usually develop slowly, whereas the flu tends to come on suddenly. Flu viruses travel through the air in droplets when someone with the infection coughs, sneezes or talks.

The Public health agency of Canada recommends annual flu vaccination for everyone age 6 months or older. Each year's seasonal flu vaccine contains protection from the four influenza viruses that are expected to be the most common during that year's flu season.

Your Medicure Plus pharmacist can provide flu shots to anyone age 5 years and older. Please contact us for the vaccination. For all your self-care needs, visit Medicure Plus pharmacy today.

As an official summer season is near to end (23rd September) and it's almost the start of the common cold season.
The common cold is a self-limited contagious disease that can be caused by several different types of viruses. The common cold is medically referred to as a viral upper respiratory tract infection. Symptoms of the common cold may include cough, sore throat, low-grade fever, nasal congestion, runny nose, and sneezing.

The common cold is spread either by direct contact with infected secretions from contaminated surfaces or by inhaling the airborne virus after individuals sneeze or cough

Tips to Prevent The Common Cold:

While it is impossible to completely prevent the spread of colds, there are steps you can take to reduce your and your family's chances of becoming infected with a virus that causes colds:

1) Wash your hands often.

2) Avoid touching your face, especially the nose, mouth, and eye areas.

3) Don't smoke.

4) Use disposable items if someone in your family is infected.

5) Keep household surfaces clean.

6) If your child has a cold, wash his or her toys as well.

7) Use paper towels in the kitchen and bathroom for drying hands after hand washing.

8) Throw tissues away after use.

9)Maintain a healthy lifestyle.

10) Control stress.

[05/25/19]   From your local Medicureplus Pharmacy , as camping season starts we have to remember some safety tips.

Vaccinations can help protect against certain diseases and conditions while camping. Check with your local pharmacist to see if you’ve had all of the recommended vaccines. He or she may recommend tetanus, pertussis (whooping cough), meningitis, and/or hepatitis A.

Bring safe and healthy foods along on your camping trip. Eating contaminated food and drinking contaminated water can increase the risk of developing certain infectious diseases caused by germs.

Camping is a great way to get physical activity. Do things such as walking, hiking, biking, or swimming to stay active during your camping trip. Be sure to bring protective gear, such as helmets, sturdy shoes, and life jackets. Know your limits, and take steps to avoid injury during activities.

[05/10/19]   Happy Mothers Day from your Medicureplus Pharmacy.

Mother’s Day is just around the corner, which provides the perfect opportunity to reflect on how incredible moms truly are. They give so much of themselves to their children, partners, work and communities. Unfortunately, without an adequate plan for self-care, it is not uncommon for women to lose themselves in the process.

We all need to slow down, recharge and evaluate our health from time to time, especially moms. Many health problems develop slowly, which is why it is important that we address small issues before they get out of hand. Whether you’re a mother yourself or not, here are a few things to remember.

You deserve a break, don’t forget about ‘me time,’ outside of your usual activities. Use this time to recharge, relax, and do something you enjoy.

Make exercise a part of your daily routine, or better yet make it a part of your family’s. Go for a bike ride, take the dog for a stroll, play a game of tag in the backyard.

There is no shame in turning to friends, family or healthcare professionals to help when life gets overwhelming. Plug into the support systems that are available to you to help alleviate some of the pressures of daily life.

[04/26/19]   A friendly reminder from your Medicureplus Pharmacy,

If you’ve notice that your child’s nose has been running for a few days. He/She begins sneezing, develops an occasional cough, and has to blow his nose frequently. You ask yourself, “Could this be allergies? Or is it just a common cold virus?”

From the forecast for this weekend, we're going to get a sudden drop in temperature. It's more likely that someone would get sick after a rapid drop in temperature than after a rapid increase in temperature, because viruses themselves can survive longer in the cold. Viruses are more likely to spread in humid environments as well.

Your Medicureplus Pharmacist can prescribe you medications for your needs.

[04/12/19]   Happy Easter from us , all the best to you and your families.

With all the changes in the weather, there are many viral infections being spread through water and also airborne.

Constantly drinking water can save you from getting dehydrated.
