That's like saying you expected to correct a nutrient deficiency by taking ONE multivitamin. Look at it this way - if you are suffering from a chronic tendon or ligament issue and it has been an issue for months to years, it is pretty unrealistic to think a single treatment is going to magically cure you. Yet, I constantly get patients in my office who have seen other practitioners and have given up on prolotherapy as a treatment because they expected a single treatment to restore function and eliminate pain.

Prolotherapy, for most people, requires a series of injections. Here's why - prolotherapy works by recruiting your body's own healing capabilities and gives you a second chance at healing the injured structure. That healing response is dependent on a number of factors including

💦how well hydrated you are
🍎how well you eat (you need nutrients to heal...)
💥whether or not you have other systemic health issues
🏃‍♀️your activity level (the more sedentary you are the less effective the treatment)
👦your age (we heal less effectively the older we get)
🍺whether you smoke or drink alcohol
💊did you take NSAIDs like ibuprofen leading up to your treatment?
⏰ how long the injury has been present and the extent of the damage to the structures

Even though you should expect to need multiple treatments, there are patients who respond to a single treatment. However, these people tend to be those who really take care of themselves - eat well, get quality sleep, exercise daily, have great stress management tools. I fell into this category when I first experienced prolotherapy in my 20s after a bobsled crash caused a back injury. One treatment set me right and gave me back my life.

Our neighbour’s cat has quite the personality. He basically babysat my three kids all afternoon with his antics and his playfulness ❤️

He loves climbing our Maple tree, going on the trampoline with the kids (I’m being totally serious) and he even joined in on the wrestling match between my two older boys! This cat is weird but awesome!

In watching him today I was actually in awe of his agility and it reminded me that exercise comes in all forms - you don’t always have to go for a run or lift weights. Just moving your body and working on mobility can do wonders! Playing can also be a great source of movement.

Of course they can. It is well known that there is a higher prevalence of chronic pain in women relative to men. In fact, women have:
- increased pain sensitivity
- higher pain ratings
- lower pain tolerance

Chronic pain and inflammation go hand in hand. Inflammation is controlled by the immune system and evidence shows that the sex hormones influence the development and the function of the immune system. When you are injured, the injury causes damage to tissues which triggers the immune system to release little messengers that promote inflammation. Some research indicates that men do not mount as strong of an immune response to injury as females. This may, in part, explain some of the difference in prevalence of chronic pain between men and women.

Ok, cool. SO WHAT? Here's the takeaway - many people in chronic pain have hormone imbalances. Not just sex hormones but also cortisol. In women, I often see low or deficient progesterone (which is anti-inflammatory), and in both men and women I see low testosterone. Hormone imbalances can fuel inflammation and can be making your pain worse.

Most people answer the mouth or the stomach, but digestion actually starts in the 🧠! True story. How well your digestion works depends on your nervous system. This is an important discussion right now, given all the changes in routine for most people given the virus. I'm seeing a number of new patients in the clinic who have had rock solid digestion their whole life but now have new symptoms that have popped up 🤷🏼‍♀️. When nothing in your diet or eating habits has changed, yet you have digestive symptoms, you have to consider the role stress may be having on how effective your digestive system is working.😬

You've probably heard of 'fight or flight' which is your sympathetic nervous system which is triggered by stress. On the flip side is 'rest & digest' which is your parasympathetic system. You can only be in one or the other, not both.
.
.
What this means is that when you are stressed is that your body down-regulates digestion. This isn't a big deal if you have balance between your sympathetic and parasympathetic systems. Most people are spending WAY TOO much time in a sympathetic/fight or flight state and this will cause physical symptoms if it goes on too frequently or for too long.
.
.
When you are in a fight or flight state:
- Stomach acid production ⬇️ (impacts nutrient absorption)
- Digestive enzyme production ⬇️
- Movement in the small intestine and large intestine ⬇️ (can lead to constipation or slow transit times)
.
.
From a symptom perspective it shows up as
- Indigestion
- Heartburn
- Bloating
- Irregular bowel movements (constipation or diarrhea)
.
.
But can also show up as non-digestive symptoms such as:
- Skin issues (including eczema)
- Fatigue
- Low energy
- Hives
.
.
How can you improve your digestion?
- Mindful eating
- Don't eat on the run - sit, relax and enjoy
- Prepare your own meals (anticipation stimulates the parasympathetic system!)
- Avoid stressors around meal time (put your phone away, don't check your email or social media accounts)

A #dryskinbrush is a perfect and inexpensive tool for exfoliating. The key here is to use only when your skin is dry, be gentle and move the brush in small controlled circles. How often you exfoliate will depend on your skin type. You should have a nice pink glow following the face brushing - if your face is too red it means you are being too aggressive.

Work-life balance. A hot topic lately and a hard task for many. I coupled my weekend at the clinic in Fernie with a solo camping trip with my 1, 3 and 5 year old. I needed some time in nature and to get away from the busy hustle and bustle in Calgary.

The first solo parenting camping trip I’ve done with my kiddos. It definitely was a lot of work and I didn’t have a whole lot of sleep but seeing how much they loved it made it all worthwhile.

Already looking forward to our next adventure. And thanks to Grandma for babysitting while I worked 😉
