Equine Sports Massage Therapy

Massage is the most effective therapy for releasing muscle tension and restoring balance to the musculo-skeletal system. A horse that is massaged on a regular basis is less likely to develop painful muscle spasms, restrictions in the soft tissue and corresponding joints and the resulting performance limitations. A horse that is suffering from muscular tension, spasms and discomfort can reclaim full range of motion, improve performance and gait quality and perform to the best of his ability after receiving professional bodywork. Results can often be observed after only one session however, lasting changes can be made with ongoing exercise therapy focusing on correcting the horse’s posture and biomechanics in conjunction with regular bodywork.

Great article on equine taping! I've recently taken the Equi-tape course and I'm working on incorporating taping into the bodywork sessions.

The effect of therapeutic elastic kinesiology tape is based on its ability to interact with the skin and associated neuro- and mechano-sensory receptors. When applied properly, the tape allows full range of motion during activity

Did you know that: Limiting forage disrupts proper digestion.

Horses require forage to be available 24 hours a day, all day and all night. Not that they actually eat during the entire 24 hours, but rather to simulate a natural environment where they can graze on forages as they wish. When they know that forage is always available, they slow down their eating, take time for a nap or socializing, and come back for more when they are ready. If this basic, foundational instinct is not met, the horse releases hormones which can create stress that interferes with the normal functioning of the digestive tract.

Daily stretches are so beneficial but they need to performed correctly.

Daily stretches are so beneficial but they need to performed correctly.

I often ask owners to continue with carrot stretches with their horses after treatment... and occasionally ask dog owners to do the same! :-)
The image below shows some good stretches, these stretches are great to help to horse become supple. Just remember only to ask your horse to stretch after work or after being in the field, this helps to ensure the muscles are warm and elastic..... Noticing a difference between stretches to the left compared to the right? (or vice versa!) Unevenness can be addressed with treatment, book a session to help balance your horse!
