May is Celiac Awareness Month 💚✨

Let’s talk about celiac disease — because it’s more than “just avoiding bread.” 🍞🚫

Celiac disease is a serious autoimmune condition where eating gluten (found in wheat, rye, and barley) causes the immune system to attack the small intestine.

⚠️ Signs & symptoms can include:
• Bloating
• Stomach pain
• Diarrhea
• Fatigue
• Iron deficiency
• Headaches
• Sometimes… no symptoms at all!

🩺 How is it diagnosed?
Testing may include bloodwork and sometimes an intestinal biopsy. (Important: don’t stop eating gluten before testing unless your healthcare provider advises you to.)

🥗 Treatment?
A strict lifelong gluten-free diet is currently the only treatment.

💚 Did you know?
Around 1 in 100 people are affected by celiac disease, and many people may not even know they have it.

✨ Early diagnosis can improve quality of life and help prevent complications.

If you’ve been dealing with ongoing digestive symptoms, fatigue, or unexplained health issues, it may be worth talking to your healthcare provider.

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month!

Skin cancer is the most common cancer worldwide, but it is also one of the most preventable and treatable when detected early.

Most skin cancers develop due to exposure to ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the sun or tanning beds. Over time, this damage can lead to changes in the skin that may become cancerous.

What to watch for (ABCDEs of melanoma):
• A — Asymmetry: one half doesn’t match the other
• B — Border: irregular or poorly defined edges
• C — Colour: uneven or multiple shades
• D — Diameter: larger than 6mm
• E — Evolving: any change in size, shape, or symptoms

You should also seek assessment for:
• A sore that doesn’t heal
• A spot that bleeds, crusts, or changes
• Any new or unusual skin lesion
Prevention matters:
• Use broad-spectrum SPF 30+ daily
• Reapply every 2 hours when outdoors
• Wear protective clothing, hats, and sunglasses
• Avoid tanning beds
• Seek shade during peak UV hours (10am–4pm)

Regular skin checks — both at home and with a healthcare provider — are key to early detection.

If you notice any changes, it’s important to have your skin assessed. Early detection saves lives.

💉 Adult Immunizations Matter

As part of our National Immunization Week series – Day 2, we’re focusing adulthood vaccines.

Did you know staying up to date on your vaccines isn’t just for kids? As we get older, protection from some childhood vaccines can wear off — and certain illnesses can be more serious in adulthood.

According to Alberta Health Services, adults may need:
• Tdap booster (tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis) every 10 years
• Annual flu shot
• COVID-19 vaccines (if eligible)
• Pneumococcal vaccine (65+ or high risk)
• HPV, Hepatitis B, MMR, and more depending on your age & history

Vaccines help protect you, your family, and your community from preventable diseases ❤️

Not sure if you’re up to date? Talk to your pharmacist or healthcare provider, or call Health Link at 811 to learn more.

Stay protected. Stay healthy.

This week, April 26 - May 2 is National Immunization Awareness Week!!

Over the next 4 days we will talk about some of the important vaccines.

Protecting your child starts early 💉💙

As part of our National Immunization Week series – Day 1, we’re focusing childhood vaccines.

In Alberta, routine childhood immunizations begin as early as 2 months of age and continue through childhood and the teen years—helping protect against serious illnesses like measles, whooping cough, meningitis, and more.

Following the recommended schedule ensures your child gets the best possible protection at the right time, building strong immunity as they grow.

✔️ Safe
✔️ Effective
✔️ Free for children in Alberta

Staying up to date doesn’t just protect your child—it helps protect your family and community too.

If your child has missed a vaccine, it’s never too late to catch up.

📞 Call Health Link at 811 or book with your local public health clinic to stay on schedule.
