Curious about our saliva samples at the C-BRAID lab?

We gather these samples to study our participant's cortisol levels - a hormone that plays a vital role in our body's stress response! Our goal? Connecting the dots to depression and anxiety. Pretty neat, huh?

Thinking of participating? We hope you're hydrated! πŸ’¦πŸ§ͺπŸ”¬

Meet our summer student - Zoe Kreutzer! πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ“

Tell us about your project:

"I am running a project with the goal of deepening the understanding of the mental health disparities between Indigenous and non-Indigenous adolescent populations. I want to ensure that Indigenous voices are represented in research, and that non-Western ways of knowing are given an equal space in research and academia. Hopefully, this project can help identify risk factors for anxiety and depression that may be unique to Indigenous youth!"

Tell us a bit about yourself:

"I am a mature student entering my final year of my After Degree in Psychology at the University of Calgary. I worked in Communications with a variety of non-profit organizations before returning to school to study Psychology. I stay connected with the community by volunteering with Stardale Women’s Group, a mentorship program for Indigenous girls. In my free time I love outdoor sports like climbing and cycling!"

We love having Zoe on our team this summer! We are excited for her to continue her research with us over the 2023-2024 academic year.

Meet our summer student - Ridham Madaan! πŸ‘©β€πŸŽ“

Tell us about your project:

"My summer project is looking at how communication between parents and children influences the development of internalizing disorders like depression and anxiety. Primarily, I'm conducting a close analysis of parent-child communication through microanalytic video coding, and I'm examining perceived social behaviour based on diary entries of how the parents and kids assess themselves and each other. I'm really grateful to Daniel to have given me the opportunity to be a summer student!"

Tell us a bit about yourself:

"I've been volunteering at the Kopala-Sibley lab for 3 years now. I'm about to enter my 5th year at UofC and working to get a combined degree in BCr. Community Rehabilitation and BSc. Psychology (Honours). Outside of school, I love playing video games, lifting weights and watching god-awful reality TV shows."

We are so happy to have Ridham working with us this summer!

Did you know: Rates of depression and anxiety in children are relatively low and stable until the age of 12, when they begin to sharply increase, especially in females. Of those who will ever be depressed or anxious, 75% will be diagnosed by mid- to late-adolescence.

Our study hopes to identify which factors increase the risk for youth developing these disorders!

Ever wondered how we unlock the mysteries of the brain? πŸ§ πŸ”Ž EEG, or electroencephalography, is a non-invasive technique that measures brain activity and plays a vital role in our study. By capturing the electrical signals in the brain, we can gain insights into the risk factors for depression and anxiety in youth!
