🧅 QUERCETIN - a plant pigment, is the subject of much scientific chatter, emerging in research as playing a key role in human health.

🧅 We’ll get into those in a second. Among fruits + veg, its content is highest in the ONION!

🧅 It’s been long known that quercetin is a potent antihistamine and antioxidant, but it has a very interesting ability to chelate zinc, acting as a “zinc ionophore”, to transport zinc across a cell membrane.

🧅 What’s the big deal? Zinc is a heavy hitter in immune biochemistry.

🧅 Research confirms zinc’s role in the inhibition of RNA binding + synthesis, as well as viral protease enzyme inactivation (these are only a few of its functions!)

🧅 By helping to increase intracellular zinc concentrations, polyphenols such as quercetin offer a way for us to support our body for wellness.

Good vibes + great eats!

We’re super into charcuterie boards lately. They don’t have to be all meat…quite the opposite!

It’s an awesome way to explore new flavours with the kids. Get creative, use up what you have in your fridge and make it beautiful…

Some of our fav things to enjoy:

- meat selections from .co
- raw cheese (my family digs all sorts of stinky, sharp cheese. Not my thing. But I try a wee bit)
- fermented carrots + beets
- olives
- grain free almond flour crackers
- chicken liver pâté
- soaked and roasted nuts/seeds
- dried fruit (apricots are our fav)
- organic candied ginger

Last night we had some live jazz going on in the background with Z on sax and Q on piano…we keep it super casual on charcuterie nights, often playing cards while eating.

Perfect.Friday.Night.

One of our kiddos is out with a broken foot so we’ve taken up a new hobby - chocolate making 🍫. Every evening we try a new creation from “Chocolate Life”, a new book by

I picked mine up from here in YYC.

Tonight we attempted to “temper” our chocolate, the art of heating + cooling to create a stable finished product.

We have a ways to go to dial it in, but I gotta say we’re not upset about having to try it again 😉. And again.

Today I’m enjoying it with ground flax and berries.

Bilberry has a crazy high ORAC (antioxidant capacity) and is used to support eye health, circulation + the nervous system.

This medicinal root is an easy addition to your elixirs (I 🤍 it with chocolate) - offering an earthy, gentle balancing energy for your kidney + spleen meridians (think digestion, stress, hormones - lots of good stuff!)

Some other cool things about MACA:

- it has been studied and shown to stimulate positive changes in the hypothalamic-pituitary axis (supportive of both fertility + menopause )

- it’s a source of B2, B6, Niacin, iron, zinc, iodine, calcium, magnesium and potassium

Not going to lie - this took awhile.

So why bother?

…‘cause there are serious perks to eating LIVE, fermented food:

🥕 They taste better fermented. Hands down. Have picky eaters? You will be shocked how most love the tangy, enhanced flavours of ferments.

🥕 B and C vitamins are enhanced. Not just preserved - but enhances them!

🥕 Enlist your lids to chop, slice or grate. Make it a family activity - food keeps us connected.

🥕 Friendly bacteria aid in immunity (bonus!)

Crêpes For Days…

Cassava flour style…

🥞 1 cup cassava flour (we buy )
🥞 1 tsp sea salt
🥞 1 tbsp olive oil
🥞 1 tbsp coconut sugar
🥞 2 cups of your choice of dairy/nut/oat milk
🥞 3 eggs

Mix and let sit for 45 mins (ideally this recipe is awesome to prepare the night before).

Heat up your pan to medium/high. Pour batter and spread evenly - fry each side for 30-45 secs.

Finished!

You decide if you’re in a sweet or savoury mood!

You know this - your brain is powerful! Whole body changes occur via thoughts alone. So, so cool.

An attitude of gratitude literally changes our hormones. So why not take advantage of this???

This is my new year intention - to cultivate a daily appreciation practice. Even a few minutes of reflection. Do it with me 🤍.

What are three things you are grateful for today? This doesn’t have to be deep and arduous. Have fun! Let’s lower some cortisol!

Here goes:

2. Cacao - I go to bed thinking of my morning elixir, like I used to do coffee years ago. Something about my morning ritual…a piping hot bevvie all to myself. After this post, I’m heading straight to the kitchen to whip it up. I’m grateful every morning for this!

3. My cozy new housecoat. A gift from a close friend. Loving it. Grateful. So cozy and fluffy.

3. My 6 month old niece. Her cheeks are everything. My sister sends me a daily picture of her for my “heart medicine”. No joke. LOVE her. So grateful.

Known as the body’s master antioxidant, glutathione is one of my absolute favorite compounds!

Glutathione is found in almost every cell within the human body. It is naturally produced by the liver and is comprised of three amino acids; cysteine, glycine, and glutamate. With over 89,000 research articles on glutathione, low levels are associated with many chronic illnesses, autoimmune diseases, systemic inflammation, and accelerated aging.

Glutathione deficiency is an epidemic due to poor diets, widespread pollution, toxins, mold, medications, stress, trauma, aging, infections and radiation that deplete glutathione levels.

Individuals with genetic variants such as MTHFR, GSTM1, and others impact glutathione status.

This sweet bear sits on our desk at the clinic - a handcrafted gift from our eldest a few years ago 🤍.

The bear reminds us to be thoughtful + courageous in our work while holding a space of constancy + stillness (mountain vibes) for people to explore their story.

Today I’m honoured to share space with 13 wonderful individuals.
There will be triumphs and frustrations, struggle + success…our health journey is full of the entire spectrum of emotion and experience.

We adore the kraut snacks made by the fine folks - and so we often try a version at home, with whatever we have fermenting at the time.

Tonight it was dilly carrots + beets + radishes. The kids still say ours isn’t quite as yummy, but we’ll keep trying…😜

You’ll notice we sprinkle our salads with pumpkin seeds (soaked and dehydrated to activate them for easier digestion and all that good stuff) but also for ZINC.

Have you heard of zinc lately? Likely so. For good reason. It’s supportive of many things good in the body.

Food is an awesome way to deliver bioavailable nutrients to your family…
