In 1949 Halliburton became the first company to use commercialized hydraulic fracturing in the United States. Technological advances in extracting hydrocarbons from shale led by George P. Mitchell known as the ‘Father of Fracking’ perfected horizontal drilling. These fracking techniques coupled with dramatic shifts in global energy markets led to the boom in US drilling and the production of oil and gas. Success came with its inherent share of hazards of oil well and rig fires and deadly blowouts. Red Adair an American oil well firefighter became an innovator in the specialized and hazardous profession of extinguishing and capping 3000 oil well blowouts land based and off shore. Geopolitical destabilization has contributed significantly to oil patch carnage and the possibility of an all out world war.
