Founded in 1995, Oxford House Foundation of Canada is a non-profit organization that provides self-run, peer-supported sober recovery homes for men and women who have a history of substance abuse and are homeless or at risk of homelessness. By providing a safe and stable environment where men and women can focus on their recovery, Oxford House supports individuals to develop the skills necessary for self-sufficiency and successful reintegration back into society. Oxford House has 28 recovery homes operating in Calgary, Drumheller and Edmonton. When men and women in recovery come to Oxford House, they have already taken some important steps on their road to recovery. They’re ready to work hard. They know they’ll get out what they put in. And when they take the next step to live in an Oxford Home, they know we’ll support them. Because we’ve been there and know how important this step is. Recovery without relapse is possible in an Oxford home. Each home forms its own family and is situated in a suburban neighbourhood away from danger areas. The peer support of other residents in the house who have experienced many of the same difficulties is a benefit to our residents. They find understanding and hope while learning how to live with life’s challenges.

🏡 PROGRAM RATIONALE 🏡

At Oxford House, our program is built upon the foundations of social learning, self-help, and peer support. We understand the critical role a safe and sober living environment, coupled with social support, plays in the recovery journey. Here's why our approach makes a difference:

🔑 A SAFE AND SOBER LIVING ENVIRONMENT 🔑
Finding and maintaining a stable, supportive living environment is vital for recovery. Returning to stressful family situations or homelessness after treatment often leads to high relapse rates. Oxford House offers an alternative aftercare model, creating a home-like environment that prioritizes safety and security. Here, individuals develop positive relationships, life skills, and self-efficacy.

🧠 SOCIAL LEARNING THEORY 🧠
As addiction takes hold, individuals often have less interaction with healthy, non-addicted peers. Friends and family may disengage, leaving them surrounded by others associated with addiction. Breaking free from this influence is challenging. Oxford House provides a ready-made support network that models healthy coping skills for managing stress without substances. Observing others maintain abstinence boosts self-efficacy, empowering individuals to believe they can do the same.

🤝 SOCIAL NETWORKS THAT SUPPORT SOBRIETY 🤝
A sober social network is a cornerstone of recovery. It fosters self-efficacy and reinforces sobriety. Social support systems that actively discourage drinking lead to better outcomes three years after treatment completion. At Oxford House, we're dedicated to helping individuals build these networks that empower lasting recovery.

Together, we create a supportive environment where individuals can thrive in their journey to sobriety. 🌟

🌟 Things to Remember 🌟

As we navigate through the ups and downs of life, it's essential to keep a few important truths close to our hearts. Here are some valuable reminders that can help us maintain our balance and find inner peace:

1. Tomorrow is a New Day: No matter how tough today might be, remember that each new dawn brings fresh opportunities. Each sunrise is a chance to start afresh, learn from yesterday, and make the most of today.

2. Making Mistakes is Part of Life: Nobody is perfect, and that's perfectly okay. Mistakes are steppingstones to growth and self-discovery. Embrace them, learn from them, and use them as fuel for personal development.

3. Saying "No" is Okay: Your time and energy are precious resources. It's okay to say "no" when something doesn't align with your values, goals, or well-being. Setting boundaries is an act of self-care, not selfishness.

4. Not Everyone Has to Like You: We all have unique personalities, and not everyone will resonate with yours, and that's perfectly normal. Focus on being your authentic self and surround yourself with those who appreciate and support you for who you are.

5. Beauty and Strength Come from Within: While external appearances may catch the eye, true beauty and strength radiate from within. Cultivate kindness, empathy, and inner resilience. These qualities will shine through in your actions and interactions, leaving a lasting impact on those you meet.

Incorporate these reminders into your daily life, and you'll find yourself better equipped to navigate the challenges and joys that come your way. 🌈💪✨
Feel free to share these words of wisdom with your loved ones, because sometimes, we all need a little reminder to stay grounded and embrace the beauty of our journey. 💖

Our Story

Founded in 1995, Oxford House Foundation of Canada is a non-profit organization that provides peer-supported sober recovery homes for men and women who have a history of substance abuse and are homeless or at risk of homelessness. By providing a safe and stable environment where men and women can focus on their recovery, Oxford House supports individuals to develop the skills necessary for self-sufficiency and successful reintegration back into society. When men and women in recovery come to Oxford House, they have already taken some important steps on their road to recovery. They’re ready to work hard to maintain their recovery and take the necessary steps toward independent, financially sustainable and more fulfilling lives. And when they move into an Oxford Home, they know we’ll welcome and support them with information and resources within the recovery, and greater community.

Why?

Because we’ve been there and understand that acceptance, hope, honesty, personal accountability, goal setting, and gratitude are crucial to long-term recovery.
