Ringing in your ears? You’re not alone.

About 1 in 5 people experience tinnitus — that ringing, buzzing, or noise only you can hear.

For many, it’s linked to changes in the inner ear (often from aging or noise exposure). This is called primary tinnitus.

But sometimes, tinnitus can have other causes.

• Pulsatile tinnitus – sounds that match your heartbeat (can be linked to blood flow)
• Somatic tinnitus – changes when you move your jaw, neck, or eyes

The important part:
👉 Understanding the cause can help you manage it better.

👂 We’re here to help

If this sounds familiar, book a hearing assessment to better understand your tinnitus and your options.

⚠️ Appointments fill up quickly — we recommend booking early.

Not sure if your hearing is as sharp as it used to be? 👂

Hearing loss often happens gradually — and many people don’t notice it right away.

You might need a hearing test if you:
• Ask people to repeat themselves often
• Turn up the TV or phone volume more than usual
• Feel like conversations sound muffled
• Struggle to hear in noisy places
• Feel tired after listening for long periods
• Have friends or family commenting on your hearing

Ignoring hearing changes can affect your communication and daily life — but the good news is, it’s easy to check.

Did you know that about 20% of people (one in every five) have tinnitus. For most people, the tinnitus is associated with damage to the hair cells in the inner ear, commonly from aging or noise exposure. This is what we refer to as primary tinnitus and is only heard by the person who has it.

Secondary tinnitus is related to an identifiable cause other than hearing loss. In these cases, the tinnitus may be reduced or eliminated when the cause of the tinnitus is addressed. For instance, pulsatile tinnitus, where the tinnitus occurs in time with the person’s heartbeat, may be related to the blood vessels in the head and neck. Somatic tinnitus is another classification of tinnitus that is altered by movement of the body. Some people can change the volume or pitch of the tinnitus by moving their eyes, jaw, neck or facial muscles.

If this sounds familiar to you, we encourage you to contact our office to book a Meet & Greet with our specialist, Suzanne MacLaren, to gain a better understanding of your tinnitus and how to effectively manage it 403-685-0810.

What is the difference between Tinnitus and Sound Sensitivity?

You may be confused by the terms that your doctor or audiologist uses when talking to you about your symptoms. Many people have sounds in their ears, often described as a hissing or high-pitched tone. If you hear a sound in your ears or head, and there is no external source, you have tinnitus. The good news is that you can learn ways to reduce the annoyance of these sounds so that it doesn’t affect your quality of life.

Tinnitus is one of several sound sensitivities that can affect individuals. Others include Hyperacusis, Phonophobia and Misophonia, all of which can impact your quality of life. If you or someone you know is bothered by sound, we can help. Call us at 403-685-0810 to book for a Sound Sensitivity Meet and Greet appointment today!
