Why does your jaw click when you open your mouth? 🤔

If you notice a clicking or popping when you chew, talk, or yawn, you’re not alone. It’s actually pretty common, and on its own, it doesn’t always mean something is wrong.

👉 Most of the time, that “click” comes from how a small disc inside your jaw joint moves as you open and close. It’s often more about coordination than damage.

What matters more is this:
• Is it painful?
• Does your jaw feel stuck or locked?
• Is it affecting eating, talking, or sleeping?

Your jaw is part of a bigger system. Muscles, posture, neck tension, clenching, stress, and even sleep can all play a role in how it feels and moves.

💡 Good to know:
A noisy jaw isn’t always a problematic jaw.

But it’s worth getting checked if:
• The clicking hurts
• Your jaw locks or catches
• You can’t open fully
• You have headaches, neck pain, or facial tension

The goal isn’t just to “stop the click” but it’s to help your jaw move comfortably and function well in daily life.

If something feels off, getting the right assessment at Avenue Physio can make all the difference.

Jaw pain near the ear… could it actually be TMJ? 👂🦷

Because your jaw joint (TMJ) sits right in front of your ear, pain in that area may come from the joint, the disc, or the surrounding muscles, not just the ear itself.

🔍 Signs it may be TMJ-related:
• Pain when chewing or talking
• Discomfort when yawning or opening wide
• Clicking or popping
• Jaw stiffness or fatigue
• Headaches, facial tension, or neck tightness

But here’s the important part:
It’s not always just the joint.

Jaw muscles, clenching/grinding, posture, and even your neck can all contribute to TMJ pain.

⚠️ Other possible causes include:
• Muscle tension
• Dental issues
• Sinus pressure
• Ear conditions
• Neck-related pain

💡 When should you get it checked?
• Pain keeps coming back
• Chewing becomes uncomfortable
• Your jaw locks or clicks painfully
• You can’t open fully
• You’re unsure what’s causing the pain

✔️ The key isn’t just where it hurts, it’s understanding why.

At Avenue Physio, we assess the full picture: jaw, neck, muscles, and movement patterns so you get the right treatment, not just a guess.
