It's OK!
Injuries happen.
In fact they generally DO happen if you start out too hard, lift what your muscles and joints cannot safely support, and don't give your body enough time to rest and recuperate after.
While injury might be normal, it is definitely not ideal. You are probably finding yourself entering the month of March, discouraged and no closer to the goal you planned for January. Here are some tips to help you recover now, get back on track, and prevent injuries in the future.
1. Massage- It is what I do, so I figured I would just put it out there, right in the front and centre. I don't just want to sell you a massage here though. I want you to understand why and how it helps.
My clients constantly see results when they start to listen to what their body needs and massage is fantastic at helping build that reconnection. In a 60 minute treatment we have enough time together to explore what is causing the pain and tension, treat it with specific techniques, and develop a plan for the future based on what you need. We are a team that works together on your goals!
2. Slow Down- You cannot start at the peak of where you stopped. That is not where you are at and you absolutely need to be realistic about this. Progress is going to happen in the long term and you need to challenge your thinking here. Are you pushing yourself too much? Are your activities being performed safely? Mindfully and honestly assess how you feel as you do your exercises. Ask yourself if you might need some help to get it right.
3. Consistency- A smaller workout that you can do 3 times this week is better than one that leaves you unable to walk for 3 days. Especially when you are recovering from an injury. What is the minimum you can do that gets you moving? This will help you build a sustainable practice that works with your schedule and keeps you going forward.
Once you are injury free, and better connected to your body, this is a great time to push yourself a little more. And remember, if you think you have overdone it, I would highly recommend a post workout massage!
