This is a myth that has been debunked - soy is a safe protein after cancer. Soy is actually associated with a lower risk of cancer.

I am honoured to have been invited to speak at this year's Holistic Nutritionist Annual Conference in Calgary on April 12. The conference is open to the public. This is the first time the conference has had a topic on nutrition and cancer, and I am so very excited to be there. Check out the pre-conference interview on You Tube!

Here is Part Two of my Life After Cancer series. This post discusses the link between cancer treatment and cardiovascular disease.

It is estimated that there are about 17 million cancer survivors currently living in the US. The population of people who are cancer survivors continues to increase, due to the advancing age of the population as well as the improved response rates to chemotherapy and immunotherapy. However, even wit...

Happy New Year! I'd like to start 2025 by sharing a few of my recent blog posts. It's a two part series entitled Life After Cancer. The aim of the blogs are to educate and inform you about two conditions that cancer survivors are at increased risk to develop: osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease.

Please reach out to my clinic at 403-202-7272 to book an appointment for any questions you may have.

As of 2019, there are about 16 million cancer survivors in the US and about 32 million globally. Women with early-stage breast cancers and men with non-metastatic prostate cancers represent the two largest groups of survivors (40% of all cancer survivors). With an increasing number of cancer survivo...

Tip of the Week - Sleep Apps for Insomnia. Cognitive Behavioral Therapy for Insomnia (CBT-I) is the gold standard therapy for the treatment of insomnia. However, access to professionals may be limited for many patients.

Sleep-based apps have been created and validated in studies with cancer survivors, and show that there are improvements in sleep, which also coincide with decreases in the need for sleep medication. While I am not affiliated with nor endorse any particular app, Mi Sleep Coach is one such app that was studied with success in a group of cancer survivors. There are many, so please share your success stories here!

Foundation 4 - Sleep Post #2. A second reason for disrupted sleep in cancer survivors is wacky neurotransmitter production. Neurotransmitters, such as dopamine, epinephrine, serotonin and GABA, either excite us or make us relax. Due to chronic stress and immune dysregulation, neurotransmitters can be overactive or deficient, impairing our brain's ability to get into sleep mode.

You can test your neurotransmitters to see if this is a cause of your insomnia. Balancing neurotransmitters can be done naturally through amino acid supplementation. This is not a well known cause of sleep dysregulation, so please reach out if you would like to do this easy test.

What is Integrative Oncology?

I consider myself extremely lucky to be working in a field that I am passionate about. Let me take a moment to tell you a little bit more about my field, and how I can help you or a loved one with cancer.

My area of expertise is integrative oncology. This means that I provide treatments and supportive care while people are going through conventional cancer treatments, and afterwards to help them recover from those treatments. The treatments I provide prevent or lessen the side effects of chemotherapy or radiation, and help you maintain a good quality of life. Treatments also strengthen the immune system and reduce inflammation, which can help fight cancer.

When treatment is over, my role then shifts to helping you do everything possible to reduce your risk of recurrence. Mind/body therapies, exercise, nutrition, weight loss, and stress management play a big role in preventing recurrence, and I guide you through that, one step at a time.

They say that cancer is a journey, and so wherever you are in your journey, integrative oncology can likely play a role, and help to make it feel a lot less overwhelming.
