September 30th is National Day of Truth and Reconciliation, or Orange Shirt Day. This day is to commemorate the history of residential schools in Canada and honour the Indigenous peoples impacted. It is an opportunity to listen to the stories of the past and learn from them to create a better future.

Nostalgia is a predominantly positive emotion. We get a happiness boost when we are reminded of an event that we feel fortunate to have experienced. This is where gratitude comes in; instead of focusing on your sadness that a moment has passed, you can feel how fortunate you were to have had that experience. If you consciously decide to create anticipated nostalgia for yourself, you will feel the positive effects beginning at the present moment that the memory is formed.

If you have consistently focused on practicing gratitude, you have probably noticed a difference in your outlook on life. Shifting into an attitude of gratitude leads to more contentment in where you are, appreciation for how far you've come, and even hope for the future. Remember the difference in how you feel when gratitude becomes a practice, and make an effort to maintain this perspective of appreciation and wonder.

Taking a moment to reflect on the little things can make a world of difference. 🌱 Gratitude isn’t about waiting for perfect moments. It’s about noticing the beauty and growth in everyday life, even in the challenges. Whether it’s a quiet walk, a random act of kindness or seeing how far you’ve come, gratitude is a powerful tool for improving mental well-being.

Gratitude often gets tied to big moments like promotions, weddings or birthdays but it can be just as powerful in the quiet everyday times especially with family. Family relationships are not always easy but practicing gratitude can help us connect on a deeper level when we learn to appreciate both the good and the bad moments.

It is easy to take family for granted. They have been there through all the highs and lows yet we do not always stop to notice how much they shape who we are. Gratitude in these relationships is not about pretending everything is perfect. It is about seeing the small meaningful moments that keep us connected even when things feel messy or unfinished.

We love to keep it simple, and when practicing gratitude it is no different! Having an attitude of gratitude means you can find joy and appreciation for the small things in life. It means cultivating the ability to see a positive no matter your situation, allowing yourself a never-depleting source of positivity by practicing mindfulness in every moment.

It's easy to slip into the same prattling list of things to be grateful for. But for practicing gratitude to be effective, you've got to dig deep!

Notice the difference with this exercise: first, think of five things you're grateful for. It probably will not take long. Now, try and think of five more - you might need to get more specific. Can you think of another five after that, bringing the list to fifteen?

Once you take the time and effort to really ponder things you're grateful for, the authenticity of your gratitude will increase. This turns quick platitudes into more meaningful gratitude. Try to keep growing the list, and be amazed at how your appreciation for life and positivity grows with it!

Looking for a silver lining in the face of a challenge is a completely natural response, but gratitude and positivity can become toxic when forced at the wrong time. If we push less than genuine gratitude on ourselves or others during acute challenges, it can downplay and trivialize the situation. Instead of skirting over the negative aspects, an important first step is to recognize them. You must acknowledge and process negative emotions, or you will not be able to heal from them.

Being grateful does not change your circumstances.

Instead, it changes your perspective on those circumstances and invites an acceptance and contentment within them. This doesn't have to mean complacency - there is always room to grow and strive for better. But it can create a haven of appreciation for where you stand in the present and how far you've come.

When work takes over too much of our lives, it’s not just about feeling tired, it starts to mess with our health, our relationships and our mood. Suddenly, we’re snapping at loved ones, forgetting small things or just zoning out in front of Netflix because we have zero energy left. When we prioritize time for rest, hobbies and the people who matter, something changes. Not only do we feel better but we perform better, too. Balance isn’t about cutting back on work; it’s about finding a rhythm that lets both your professional and personal life get the attention they deserve.
