Can emotions be controlled?

This question leads to a range of answers, even from experts! Emotions are powerful, and complicated. A better question might be, "should emotions be controlled?"

Mindfulness teaches the power noticing our feelings without letting them overwhelm us. Even very strong emotions are temporary. Emotions are part of us, and it is better to coexist with them versus fighting them. Yet, though part of us, our emotions do not define who we are.

Whether or not our feelings can be controlled, how we react to our emotional state can. We can choose to be kind to others and ourselves during heightened emotion. And we can strive to be patient as the storms of emotion run their course.

The feelings wheel is a tool to help you understand and cope with emotions. To use the wheel, start at the center and identify the general emotion you are experiencing. Further from the center, the emotions are broken down into more specific feelings.

When you identify your feelings this way, it increases your insight and emotional vocabulary. Studies show that identifying an emotion calms your fight-or-flight response. Understanding what you are feeling can also help you pinpoint a cause, better equipping you to manage it in that moment and the future.

When you are uncomfortable, remember that you are more than how you feel in that moment. Your value and identity encompass a huge range, and one down moment does not define your worth.

Take a moment to mindfully check in with yourself!

Pause whatever you are doing and step away from any distractions. Take a deep breath in, perhaps with eyes closed. Then do an internal scan of your body and mind.

What thoughts and emotions are you experiencing? Is there any tension in your body that you can release right now? Can you bring this calm awareness into the next part of your day?

Little check-ins like this don't take long, but they can make a big impact on your day!

Practicing mindfulness means increased introspection. As we examine our imperfect selves, we will inevitably find weaknesses amongst our strengths. It can be difficult not to focus and dwell on these perceived flaws.

While self-improvement is commendable, it is essential to find a level of acceptance and contentment in who you are today. We will always have faults. The key to finding contentment through mindfulness is to recognize the negative aspects of life without judgement, and recognize that wherever they come from, they are a part of life.

Calling mindfulness a "practice" is not an accident. When you practice something, you are working on it over time to improve your skill. Just like practicing an instrument, being proficient at mindfulness takes time and effort. Practicing earnestly means you can benefit from the rewards that mindfulness will bring, and the effort will be worth it!
