Arizona Hiking Adventure Day 6
Boynton Canyon trail to Subway Cave

Our last day in Arizona and last red rock hike.

Driving into Sedona is breathtaking. The color of the rock is such a deep red. The color of the landscape is like nothing I’ve ever seen before. Definitely worth a trip!

Our last hiking day started off gorgeous… and ended with the biggest storm we experienced while we were there.

The rain had threatened to start around 10am, so we got an early start on our hike. It started to drizzle a bit, but thankfully stopped before we got to the cave & didn’t restart until after we’d finished!

No one stopped us from taking the hard climb up a small crevice in the rock, but told us when we reached the top there was an easier way we could take to get down.

The subway cave views were amazing and we met some really nice people there.

A hot tub in the rain and a Netflix show finished off our day and we flew out the next afternoon from Phoenix. Another hiking trip in the books, a phone full of photos and a ton of memories.

Arizona Hiking Adventure Day 5
Devil’s Bridge Trail, Sedona & wine tasting in Cottonwood, AZ

Today’s hike was my favorite from the trip!

Devil’s Bridge is Sedona’s largest natural sandstone arch and a very popular hike, featuring a mostly easy trail that ends with a steep, rocky climb to the bridge.

I was so impressed by all the hikers who respectfully waited in line, so each person or group could get their photo on the arch.

We really lucked out on this one, getting back on the shuttle right before another rain storm started.

There are 2 hikes that lead to Devil’s Bridge, we took the shuttle to the Dry Creek Vista trailhead. As we descended things didn’t look right to me, we were going down in a totally different direction than we’d come from, but Kate was sure it was correct… until she wasn’t…

We’d gone down to the Mescal trailhead

Thankfully the shuttle goes to both, so we were able to get back to our car. We weren’t the only ones who’d made the mistake… I sure hope that other lady found her car easily!

The rain was forecasted to last the rest of the day, so we pivoted from our original hiking plans and drove to Cottonwood to sample some Arizona wine. I had no idea there were wineries in Arizona before doing research for this trip!

There are tasting rooms in Cottonwood and along the Verde Valley in Sedona. The rain had scared most people away, so we were the only patrons at Bodega Pierce and Cove Mesa and only a few others were at Chateau Tumbleweed.

I was starving after a lack lustre food selection at the tasting rooms, so we stopped at G’s burgers in Cornville on the way home, which was a fantastic decision! This tiny town sure has some fun and interesting people!

Arizona Hiking Adventure Day 5
Oak Creek Canyon, Coconino Natural Forest & Cathedral Rock, Sedona

Our 1st hike of the day was through the beautiful wilderness of Coconino Natural Forest. This hike has multiple water crossing, where rock paths through the creek help keep your feet dry.

If you have water shoes, you can walk through the canyon, but we only went as far as the entrance to the canyon.

Sedona was our next stop. It was a rare hot day compared to the rain and thunder storms we kept experiencing. The hottest day of our trip!

We got into Sedona around 1pm and in the heat of the day decided to take the shuttle & hike Cathedral Rock.

Not only was it the hottest day, this was also the only hike we did with a decent amount of elevation.

We hiked straight up stairs of rock to a stunning view from the top. I was so thankful the shuttle bus driver had lots of bottled water for after the hike because in our rush to get another hike in I hadn’t refilled my bladder and was out of water.

Dinner that night wasn’t the best meal, but the sunset view from the restaurant was remarkable. The photos look like postcards!

Arizona Hiking Adventure Day 4 Continued
Marble Canyon & Cathedral Wash Slot Canyon

This slot canyon hike was so unique it deserves its own post!

We had lots of light left in the day after seeing Antelope Canyon, so after the tour we got in the car and drove to Marble Canyon and hiked through Cathedral Wash.

The slot canyon hike was an adventure! We climbed up and down the walls and into the canyon, I loved it!

The hike was like a puzzle, determining what side of the canyon we needed to be on, whether we needed to be on the canyon floor or up the rock walls.

It is a challenging, technical route involving significant scrambling, downclimbing, and navigating around obstacles like dryfalls. So fun!

Arizona Hiking Adventure Day 4
Upper Antelope Canyon

We pre-booked this tour because you need a guide to get into Navajo Nation and experience Antelope Canyon.

And what an experience it was!! So incredible!!

We drove there on a bumpy dirt road, through the dust, belted together in the back of an open pick up truck laughing at the craziness of it all!

Antelope canyon is known for its monumental sandstone sculptures and the iconic beams of sunlight that radiate down from above.

The light coming through, brightening the colourful walls was magical. Our guide was so good, helping us take amazing photos that capture the magnificent of it all while describing each area and how the canyon was formed.

Arizona Hiking Adventure Day 3
Horseshoe Bend Overlook, Beehive Trail & Lake Powell

Our next stop was Page, where the time zone shifts make the day go forward and backwards in time. At one point Kate & I were in the same room and our phones showed different time zones!

It was a beautiful day and plenty hot, so after a couple short hikes we headed to Lake Powell to kayak and jump in the water to cool off.

Arizona Hiking Adventure Day 1 & 2
Tonto Natural Forest & Tonto Natural Bridge

We started off our hiking journey in Payson, where we stayed for 2 nights. In Tonto Natural forest we hiked to Water Wheel Falls and had our first experience with the beautifully coloured rock formations. Here the rocks had pink hues with some brilliant blue sections.

The weather leading up to our trip looked incredible. High 20’s and low 30’s was predicted… this isn’t what we got and on day 2 we had our first rain day.

We’d come to hike though, so we grabbed our rain coats and headed out to Tonto Natural Bridge. The Ranger had told us we’d be able to climb down and under the natural bridge, but that was not possible, so we climbed down on both sides to see the different vantage points.

We’d hoped to get a couple hikes in that day, but due to the rain instead went to the local cinema and watched “A Big Bold Beautiful Journey.” An interesting movie with Margot Robbie & Colin Ferrel about choosing being content with your life over looking for happiness.

There will be times when you are deeply unhappy. But if you keep an open mind and choose to be content with the life you have, then you can weather the storm. And moments of happiness will come, too.

It really made me think about my life, where I’d been feeling so unhappy and contemplate what that’s about and how I can be more content vs searching for happiness.

Nihahi Ridge
12km 845m elevation gain

The 1st 2-3km of this hike are deceiving. It’s pretty flat getting to the mountainside, but once you’re there it’s mostly steady elevation gain and it gets very steep at the top, including some scrambling.

The slope down is pretty intense, poles are definitely recommended for the decent.

We didn’t transverse the ridge once we reached the top because it goes on for quite some distance and the stunning views are basically the same along.

It was a little smokey, but still gorgeous and totally worth my tired legs & weirdly sore toes!

Sport Chek Mother’s Day 10km Run
55 min 56 seconds

The hill that was so lovely to run down, became the crux of this race, I thanked all my Peloton run classes with never ending hills for the stamina to run the whole way up.

Here I was, fighting for my life, when a grandma, pushing a baby in a stroller sped by me up that hill. Talk about being humbled!! But, I was so proud of her!!

The cop who I had a laugh with, the volunteer who gave me the thumbs up, seeing Erica after the switchback, the huge whoop from Lauren as I gave it my all, and Jayson & Blair yelling my name as I sprinted towards the finish line. These are the moments I cherish from that race.

I finished way faster than I ever thought possible… Jayson, maybe that 55 minute 10km isn’t as far fetched as I thought it was… 💞

1st hike of 2025!!
Fullerton & Sugar Mama Loop
9.7km; 348m elevation

What a gorgeous day to get out to the mountains and wow that’s a lot of brown for January!!

We wore spikes, but really only needed for 1/2 the hike at most because of the lack of snow. Especially along Fullerton, there’s barely any snow or ice, shocking!!

We took 2 longer breaks and a couple shorter ones, which had us finishing in just under 2.5hrs, a relatively quick hike, close to home, perfection!

Although I’d like to get out skiing… I’m not complaining at all about these warm temps we’ve been having!
