Killer Moves Equine Massage

Killer Moves Equine Massage I have been an Certified Equine Massage Therapist for 8 years and I have a true passion for making our four-legged family members feel and perform their best.

I am hoping to share ongoing knowledge and continue to train these hands to benefit our horses! I wanted to learn equine massage after I saw the immense benefits it gave my horse after she was worked on. Not only her performance, but her pain management, her demeanor, and her ability to relax. Massage therapy has many benefits to a horse’s overall health including:

• Reduced recovery time for fatigued muscles
• Increase in muscle efficiency and muscle tone
• Decrease in muscle spasms
• Restoration of extensibility and deformation of muscle with the manipulation of adhesions or scarring
• Increase in range of motion
• Increased circulation
• Relaxation of the nervous system and stimulation of muscle fibers
• Assists in lymphatic flow

When doing the initial massage for your horse, I will assess the horse’s confirmation and general well-being. This will include getting some preliminary information about the horse including age, workload, breed and past injuries or issues. I will then do a hands on assessment to gain a feel for where work may be required. Massages usually last anywhere from 45 minutes to 1 hour in length. Follow up massage will be recommended based on what is found during the session.

Hello hello!

So today I’m feeling fairly passionate about something that I wanted to talk about briefly. I recently came across a video/interview that was done with a body worker and there was a bit of a comparison made between those that are certified and those that are registered as equine massage therapists.

Most of you know by now that I am actually a human nurse “by trade” and I must say this really reminded me of the whole debate about Registered Nurses versus Registered Practical Nurses. There was always an argument about who was better? Which one had more education? Why aren’t they paid the same? And this went on and now there is this horrific divide in some workplaces between these nurses. But let me tell you that a nurse is a nurse is a nurse. And if you’re a good nurse, it doesn’t matter if I wrote more essays. I need to know the skills and how to help and treat people.

Coming back to the massage bodyworkers. I truly feel that sure, some programs have a lot more bookwork involved and can be a lot more scientific. But in the end, you know what you know. You can train your brain and you can continue your education. But in my experience you can’t train your hands. Feel is everything and knowing how to correct any dysfunctions you’re feeling is even more important.

There are some incredible certified programs out there. And sure, some of you might think I am being biased because I am Certified. But I’ve never been anything but open about where I am with my knowledge and I sure as heck would not be treating horses if I didn’t know what I was feeling and why. As I mentioned in my last video, I am currently brushing up on even more education which is very self taught, but I’m still operating on the foundations that I learned in what I believe was a great extensive hands-on massage course.

So in summary, just ask questions! See who you and your horse jive with! As massage therapists and body workers for horses we all want one thing commonly: the best for the horses. Let’s work together and lean on each other to continue our education and share knowledge because really it’s about those four legged babies in the end! ❤️

Hey guys! I know I’ve been MIA but while I’ve been gone I’ve been learning a whole new way of not only massage and release, but areas of focus for training and helping a horse function in a bio mechanically correct way. I have never been SO EXCITED at the prospect of how many horses can be helped through these methods. Here’s a before and after of my miss mare herself after utilizing some new methods and balance work with Balanced with Betsy!! But that neck though. Lots of progress but lots more to do!
This has got me thinking about the billions of things we all learned for years in terms of how to train a horse and which types of movements are “correct”. Boy we were wrong!

Why is stretching super important? Ever seen your horse stiffen up more in this cold weather?

Regularly stretching your horse helps prevent injuries as well as increases suppleness. Sometimes muscles can contract and shorten depending on the issue and depending on if they are being used properly. This will always help to increase their range of motion. Not every horse is agreeable to every stretch and the types of stretching you do along with the length of time you do them differs for every horse depending on their needs.

It is important to remember that we should never stretch if any discomfort or pain is noted and NEVER stretch a cold muscle!

And the best part? Once you learn how, stretching is free body work you can do for your horse yourself to help maintain your horse and keep them feeling loose.
