Ever wake up with a headache…
Notice yourself clenching during the day…
Or feel constant tension in your neck and jaw?

It might not be “just stress.”

Your tongue plays a much bigger role than most people realize.

When your tongue isn’t resting properly (ideally up on the roof of your mouth), other muscles have to compensate. Over time, this can lead to clenching, strain through the jaw, and even tension that travels into your neck and head.

Still. Effortless. Unforced. In nature, nothing is working harder than it needs to—air moves the way it should, balance is maintained without effort, and everything returns to its natural state.
The human body is designed the same way.
When nasal breathing is the default, when the tongue rests in its proper posture, and when the airway is supported instead of compensated for, function becomes quiet. Efficient. Natural.
Myofunctional therapy is about returning to that baseline—where breathing, swallowing, and resting posture don’t require effort or awareness, just like the rhythm of nature around us.

Turns out they were onto something! Chewing with your mouth closed encourages proper tongue posture, nasal breathing, and coordinated muscle function in the face and jaw. In the myofunctional world, this simple habit helps support healthy swallowing patterns, balanced facial muscle development, and can even contribute to better airway health.
When we chew with our mouths closed, the tongue naturally stays in the right position, the lips stay sealed, and we’re more likely to breathe through our nose instead of our mouth. These small daily habits add up and play a big role in overall oral and airway health!
Sometimes the advice we heard growing up was more than just good manners… it was good myofunctional therapy. 👄✨
