The world seems to be getting more and more chaotic by the hour. The stress that comes from the lack of predictability and the constant borage of "urgent" new stories can take a toll on all of us. There is soooo much pressure to keep up, do more, be productive, earn more, do it perfectly. The idea of stopping or evening slowing is often something our body starts to tell us before our mind is ready to listen. If you are feeling burnt out, exhausted but cant sleep, if you are overwhelmed at the idea of getting everything done, know that it isn't you that failing. It is society that is failing you.

Walking through the doors for the first time is not easy. Hopefully knowing what you can expect during that first session will help.

All therapist should begin by reviewing some basic things including confidentiality & it's limits and what we call informed consent. This is important information for you to know about your rights as a client.

What happens after this depends on the therapist, their background and the type of therapy they do. But you should be able to expect the first session to be more focused on getting to know each other. I always say you are a full person and with a whole life to catch me up on and that takes times. They will likely ask questions about your currently life (friends, family, job, hobbies etc.), your background (who you grew up with, some key life experiences etc.) and about the things that has lead you to the office. The focus really is about getting a picture of who you are and what has lead you through the door.

Not knowing what to expect when you walk into therapy for the first time can be very intimidating. Watson therapy is in an old limestone building close to the river in Galt. Grief is complicated and messy, and for a lot of us our instinct is to "manage" it, contain it, make it small and appropriate. But grief is intense and whether you make space for it or not it will find a way to show up in your life. This is how grief can become insurmountable.

Warm weather is here!☀️ But with it comes added pressure to look a certain way. Social Media is rapidly filled with images of "beach bodies" and promises of rapid weight loss. If you are struggling with your body, feeling uncomfortable or anxious. If you are getting on a scale frequently to check your body's "goodness" or "worth", or if this is the year you want to learn to embrace your body and treat it well, now is a great time to start.
Treating our bodies as though they are valuable, deserving of movement🤸🤸‍♀🤸‍, nourishment and belonging is the best way to build a sustained change. A scale cannot tell you you are good enough, only you can do that. Make this summer different, treat your body differently. If you want support with this, please reach out, we are here for you.

There is a difference between being alone and being lonely. Solitude helps us find peace and calm, but more importantly it helps us remember ourselves. It is in solitude that we remember where others stop and we begin. Our boundaries, goals, values and dreams all become more clear when we spend time, even a little, in solitude. This means time alone and tuned into ourselves, not time alone and watching a screen or engaged in another distraction. If you are feeling lost, conflicted or overwhelmed, take some time to be in solitude, tune into yourself and see what comes up. If you want support with this we are here to help.

Book Recommendation!!

The Happiness Trap by Russ Harris is a fantastic book (also available in Audiobook format for those who prefer to listen). If you are feeling stuck in the struggle of trying to rid yourself of difficult emotions this book will give you tools to change that. If you are caught off guard by feeling exhausted, burnt out or so overwhelmed that your body is shutting down or tuning out, you are definitely not alone. We all have days where we are so caught up doing things (often for other people) that we completely miss things like hunger cues and changes in our emotions. The real problem with this is that it often makes us more reactive, and can lead to us behaving in ways we aren't proud of.
The good news is that there are LOTS of things that we can do to help change this cycle. One of the simplest is to start checking in with yourself more. Now I am sure that you can go down a rabbit hole and find all sorts of things a check in "should" include. The important thing is that you do it and it works for you. So set an alarm to go off twice a day and when it does ask yourself "how am I" and then do something with that information.
