The April edition of Neighbours of Hespeler Village is officially on its way to mailboxes!

This month, you can look forward to meeting the Couchman family on the cover, reading about the incredible Body Check Cancer Tournament, getting helpful tax season tips, learning more about local seniors finding connection in the community, and enjoying plenty of local events, pets, and neighbourhood stories along the way.

This issue feels especially meaningful as we celebrate 9 years of Neighbours of Hespeler Village — and my (Tony's) 7th year being part of it. I’m grateful every month for the chance to help share the stories that make Hespeler feel like home.

One of my favourite parts of this magazine is getting to tell the stories of the people who make this community feel like home.

This month, we’re featuring the Hainer Desouza family — a busy, faith-filled, sports-loving family whose story is full of love, laughter, and real Hespeler roots.

From hockey schedules and family adventures to building a life on Memory Lane, their story is such a great reminder that community is made up of everyday moments and the people who share them.

Be sure to check out their feature in this month’s issue. 🏠🎥 This week on Hespeler is Home, Tony sat down with Phil from JT Appliances to learn more about the story behind this friendly local business right here in the village.

JT Appliances offers quality used appliances, scratch-and-dent options, and some new inventory, with a real focus on honesty and customer care. Phil shared how they carefully clean, check, and stand behind what they sell — and how being part of the Hespeler community has meant so much to them. It’s the kind of place where you can ask questions, get straight answers, and feel looked after.

Since moving downtown, they’ve even been able to help some of our local restaurants when their appliances suddenly stopped working. That kind of local support matters. Also… keep an eye out for their two adorable dogs, who may stop by to say hello. ❤️🐶

Mark your calendars, Hespeler!

We’re getting together for another "Hespeler is Home" business networking event on Monday, March 30 from 5:30-7:00pm at Homewood Suites, and I’d love to see a great mix of local business owners, entrepreneurs, and community-minded people in the room.

These events are always a reminder that some of the best things in Hespeler start with a simple conversation. New connections, new ideas, local support, and a chance to cheer each other on a little.

Special guests include the Mayor of Cambridge, the Hespeler Reunion, and the Cambridge Food Bank.

🍀 Why does Hespeler have shamrocks everywhere?

Most people assume it’s tied to the town’s roots…
Some kind of deep Irish history…
A founding story passed down through generations…

It’s not.

Here’s the real story.

The shamrock became part of Hespeler because of hockey.

Decades ago, one of the early coaches in Hespeler was Irish. When it came time to name the team, he chose the Shamrocks. Simple as that.

No grand plan. No big movement. Just one decision.

But here’s where it gets interesting…

That name stuck.

Kids grew up playing for the Shamrocks.
Families filled the arena cheering for the Shamrocks.
Banners went up. Jerseys were worn. Traditions were built.

And over time, something changed.

What started as a team name quietly became part of the identity of Hespeler itself.

That’s how powerful a community can be.

And here’s the funny part…

In this month’s edition of Neighbours of Hespeler Village, the feature family just happened to all wear Shamrocks jerseys. Totally unplanned… but somehow perfectly fitting.

Like the story came full circle without us even trying.

So today, as we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day, it feels especially right to look around and see shamrocks everywhere… not just as a symbol of Ireland, but as a symbol of home.

A quick thank you as well to the Hespeler Heritage Centre for sharing this piece of local history last year. It’s one of those stories that makes you appreciate this community just a little bit more.

This month’s neighbour recipe is Chocolate Whipped Cream Puffed Pastry Hearts with fresh strawberries — super pretty, and it looks like the kind of dessert that makes people think you worked way harder than you did.

It’s my birthday today 🎉 and I’m feeling extra grateful.

I’m turning 49, and I can honestly say I’ve had a life I’ve been mostly grateful for — especially because of my four amazing kids who inspire me every day, and my incredibly loving, supportive wife who keeps striving to be the best she can be. 💛

This past year has been a really exciting one with some new ventures — including launching my video channel “Hespeler is Home” — and I’m just so thankful for the support and encouragement from this community over the past 7 years.

To celebrate, I’m doing what I love most: bringing people together.
Today from 12:00–1:30pm at Namaste London, I’m celebrating my birthday while hosting a Business Networking Luncheon for local Hespeler businesses and business owners.
