What a year!

This has easily been the most challenging year of my life both personally and professionally in all the best ways.

From starting a dream job in inpatient neurorehab (and five hour commutes), to saying the hardest goodbyes and leaving the city that’s been my home for 7 years, to starting over in new place…all while jumping into an asynchronous masters degree, training for my first marathon, and planning my wedding.

To say that this year was overwhelming is an understatement—but I wouldn’t change a thing. To my clients, colleagues, family, and friends—thank you for being on this journey with me. Here’s to staying grateful and always betting on myself, but also, showing myself a little grace this year—big things are in the works for 2026! 🤞🏻

POV: you’re practicing holiday greetings with aphasia in NMT 💬🎄🎊

Did you know singing can be easier than speaking for individuals living with aphasia?💡

This is because familiar over-learned tunes 🎶 can help trigger automatic speech due to the strong associations between melody and text in long-term memory! 💭

Singing phrases with rhythmic tapping can also help induce neuroplasticity 🧠 by rerouting speech pathways from the damaged ⬅️ left-hemisphere to language capable regions of the ➡️ right hemisphere.

Navigating the holidays with aphasia can bring about different challenges. Remember to go slow, take breaks, and show yourself and others grace this holiday season! ❤️

POV: gait training Canadian edition 🇨🇦🌨️

With the weather we’ve had lately, I can’t stop thinking about gait training in the snow last winter! 🤯

Using RAS®, we worked on advanced gait tasks like:
👀 Navigating changes in terrain
🚦Stopping and starting
↔️ Vestibular symptoms, head turning

Did you know snowfall ❄️ and warmer winter temperatures 🌡️ are associated with an increased risk of fall-related ER visits? ⚠️

It’s important to practice these skills in different situations to ensure our clients are prepared to navigate everyday life - any time of year! 💪🏻

RAS® is a Canadian Stroke Best Practice in lower-limb gait training, too! 😉

POV: you’re learning about Supported Conversation for Adults with Aphasia (SCA™) to support communication outcomes

Aphasia is a communication disorder caused by damage to the language centres of the brain 🧠following a stroke. Did you know about 1 in 3 stroke survivors in Canada develop aphasia? 💡While aphasia impacts communication, it does not does impact intelligence! 📣

SCA™ (developed by the Aphasia Institute in Toronto, Canada) is based on two core principles:
➡️ Acknowledging competence
➡️ Revealing competence

This means we assume the Person with Aphasia (PWA) understands and has important things to say (regardless of verbal output) AND we provide tools and techniques to help them express themselves, focusing on what they say, not how they say it.

I have already noticed a meaningful difference in my ability to show up as a communication partner for PWA! 💬

Reflecting on what an honour and privilege it was to be invited to speak at this year’s ! 📣 It was so special connecting with practitioners, researchers, and people living with Huntington Disease about Neurologic Music Therapy®.

Thank you all for your openness and willingness to learn, and for sharing the stigmas and barriers that still exist when accessing treatment with Huntington Disease.

A note to healthcare professionals: EVERYONE is worthy and deserving of care no matter their prognosis. Period.

I hope we all can work together to improve the quality of life for people living with Huntington Disease — one note at a time! 🧠🎶

October is Occupational Therapy Month! ➡️ Swipe through to learn how Neurologic Music Therapists and Occupational Therapists can work together 🫱🏼‍🫲🏽 to support clients.

Occupational Therapists (OT) help individuals do the things that are important to them, from self-care to productivity to leisure activities. OTs achieve this by helping individuals learn new ways of doing things, regaining and/or developing new skills, using materials and equipment that makes life easier or adapting their environment to fit their needs. Here are some examples of cotreats:

✨ Providing vestibular and proprioceptive input 🌀🤲🏻 in rhythm 🎶 for paediatric clients working on sensory coordination and integration

✨ Practicing attention exercise in music, learning musical mnemonics and singing familiar songs to support brain injury clients with thinking 🤔, remembering 💭 and communicating 🗣️

✨ Playing instruments 🥁 in specific spatial configurations ↔️↕️ to improve the motor function 💪🏻 necessary for ADLs in clients post-injury or diagnosis, such as MS or PD

✨ Engaging in preferred activities through music creation 🎼 and relaxation 🎧 to support mental health challenges ❤️

Respiratory Therapy (RT) is a health profession that helps diagnose, treat, and manage conditions that affect your lungs 🫁 to restore or maintain lung and breathing function. Here are some ways we cotreat:

✨ Supporting spinal cord injury patients with breath coordination ↔️ and capacity 📈 through assisted harmonica and melodica playing

✨ Helping patients with respiratory function through music 🎶 cued breathing and singing 🗣️ preferred music to increase 📈 vocal volume

✨ Supporting brain injury patients coming off mechanical ventilation with rhythmic entrainment 🕛 through preferred music

A technique that helps us navigate: Musical Neglect Training (MNT®)!

This technique involves structured active musical instrument 🎹 playing to focus attention on a neglected or inattentively viewed visual field. It’s primary used with individuals who have a spatial neglect or inattention post-stroke.

Did you know active performance on a musical instrument encourages spatial exploration? ➡️👀 This is enhanced when musical instruments 🎶 are placed appropriate spatial configurations and structured in time, rhythm, and tempo.
