🎓 Education Day! - Colleen stopped by the clinic to pick up her favourite ear model on her way to deliver a vestibular presentation at St. Mary’s General Hospital in Kitchener. Can you tell she is a little excited to talk about the inner ear?!

Today, Colleen had the opportunity to lead an informative session for hospital staff on vestibular disorders — conditions that can impact balance, cause dizziness, and affect overall mobility and quality of life.

The session covered:
😵‍💫 Common causes of dizziness and vertigo
🤢 The impact of vestibular dysfunction on patients
👩‍⚕️ Evidence-based physiotherapy approaches to assessment and treatment

UNO cards all over the clinic? 🤔👀

It’s not game night… it’s vestibular and concussion rehab in action 🤸‍♀️

Here at Focused Care Physiotherapy & Wellness, we use UNO cards for gaze stability exercises, which help retrain your vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR) — the system that keeps your vision clear when your head moves. If you’ve ever felt dizzy, off-balance, or like the world is bouncing when you turn your head, your VOR may need some retraining.

But that’s not all ✋
We also frequently use our UNO cards as part of concussion rehab. A concussion can sometimes impact our ocular motor function (visual skills), but targeted exercises can help restore them!

For example:
👀 Ocular motor exercises - We use the cards to work on saccades (quick eye jumps between targets) and smooth pursuits (tracking)
🃏 Peripheral vision training - Spotting cards off to the side helps improve awareness and reaction time

🟥🟩 The bold colours and numbers make great visual targets while we challenge your vestibular system, eyes, and brain! 🟨🟦

Rehab doesn’t always look like rehab — sometimes it looks like a deck of cards on the wall 💪

Most people don’t think of physiotherapy when they have jaw pain… but why not? 🤔

Your jaw (temporomandibular joint or TMJ) is just like any other joint in your body. It moves. It has muscles. It has ligaments. It can become stiff, weak, overworked, irritated, or painful.

When we treat temporomandibular disorders (TMD), we don’t do anything mysterious or unusual — we apply the same evidence-based principles we use for every other joint:

💪 Strengthening exercises to improve muscle support and control
🙆‍♀️ Stretching to restore mobility
💆‍♂️ Manual therapy to reduce stiffness and improve joint movement
📚 Education to reduce strain and improve daily habits

The start of a new year is the perfect time to reset habits and get back to moving well! At Focused Care Physiotherapy & Wellness, we have the perfect person to help you do just that — Dr. Jenna Spencer.

Our chiropractor, Dr. Jenna, doesn’t just “crack backs.” She treats everything from neck and shoulder injuries to knee pain and more. She looks at the big picture — how you move, how your body loads, and what might be holding you back. 👩‍⚕️

In this session, Dr. Jenna is performing a gait analysis on a runner experiencing knee pain and using that information to build a personalized plan to help the patient return to running confidently and pain-free.
