Physiotherapists use a range of physical techniques during treatment to ease pain and increase mobility. They also believe in the importance of the patient being involved in their own treatment. This includes education, re-training, exercises and participation, to complement the physical treatments conducted during visits!

Physiotherapists play a key role in the ICU.

Prolonged immobilization in an Intensive Care Unit (ICU) puts patients at risk for complications such as deconditioning, ICU-related weakness, myopathy and neuropathy, respiratory infections, and contractures. Physiotherapy treatment in the ICU is focused on early mobilization of critically ill patients and respiratory management of patients who are ventilator dependent. Early intervention by a physiotherapist leads to improvements in quality of care.

The CPA is proud to celebrate World PT Day! Today is an opportunity for physiotherapists worldwide to raise awareness about the crucial contribution their profession makes to keeping people well, mobile, and independent. This year the focus is osteoarthritis. Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common joint condition: 520 million people around the world have OA, and 60% of OA cases are for knee OA.

A physiotherapist can provide advice and education about pain relief and ways to manage OA. They can teach people living with OA how to improve joint movement and strengthen muscles.

The CPA celebrates the contributions of Canadian physiotherapist Dr. Jackie Whittaker and others on informing the evidence base for the production of the materials for 2022.

In order to benefit from 30 min of exercises/walking per day it has to be combined with 4-5 hours of light movement. In others exercising for 30 minutes a day and then sitting or lying all day will be not improve your mortality. Combine it with other light movement.

STUDY OF THE DAY: This large analysis of six international studies used a physical activity monitor (such as a smartwatch) to measure a person’s activity and sedentary time throughout the day. Participants were tracked over 4 - 14 years.

Researchers found that for individuals who spent a lot of time sitting, 30 minutes of daily exercise would only significantly reduce the risk of early mortality if combined with 4 to 5 hours of light movement a day (such as walking or yard work).

In other words, individuals needed to increase their light activity to obtain the benefit of their moderate activity. OPEN ACCESS

This is great news for anyone worried if they had to wear a mask or wanted to wear a mask during exercises. It doesn’t hamper or damper your exercise ability.

Manuscript acceptance day is always a great day! 🤓📚🥳
Remember that little study at the end of 2020 where we found that face masks didn’t hamper exercise performance? And remember some of the backlash that said it was “only on 12 people, so it’s invalid”? First, that’s STILL not true. Small physiological studies are valid. Second, we followed it up with a systematic review and meta-analysis (which is a fancy way of saying a large summary of ALL the relevant data that’s been published) on face masks vs. no masks on performance and exercise abilities. Guess what? *spoiler alert* masks STILL have no effect on performance and exercise abilities. 😷🚴‍♂️
