“Here’s the pattern we often see …”

In the early 1900s, life expectancy was in the 60s. Today it’s about 82.
Aging actually begins in our 30s, and over time our systems slow down and eventually wear out.

Most people will fall somewhere within the Common Trajectories of Decline, and long-term care is often home to those living in the lower ends of those trajectories.

We also use the Clinical Frailty Scale as a visual tool for noting patterns and planning ahead.

Recognizing patterns helps us plan for what may come. We call it: Predict – Prevent – Manage.

Those in the lower levels of the trajectory often hold very specific values. And while every person is different, you start to see some common themes in what matters most at that stage of life.

Today in Long-term Care:

70+ Staff will work today
A combination of Dietary, Housekeeping, Laundry, Maintenance, Administrative, Recreation and Engagement, Nurses, Health Care Assistants and Aides.

The 2nd Hand Shop is open and a few residents will head up there today to volunteer, along with the ladies that visit us on thursdays from Golden Grove Care home.

Recently two of our HCAs graduated as LPNs, Kerri-Lynn and Jen, congrats Ladies!! Today Jen spends 7-3 with Martha in orientation.

Sandra spends today in Staffing. She is confirming the Nurses and HCA schedules. Who covers Christmas and who covers New Years. Covering 24/7 means a full staff even Christmas morning. We individualize each person's request to the greatest extent possible. So everybody gets time doing what they prefer over the holidays.

The Rec crew have a bunch of things going on, including taking a group out for a van ride on this beautiful day.

The Maintenance Crew is pulling out the Christmas decorations in preps for a Winter Wonderland around here.

And Jake is holding Table Top fire drills which inlude staff, residents and our amazing volunteer Carole!

We have a one-bedroom suite available for a short-term stay November 20–December 7. Full or partial dates are fine. This is a licensed Long-Term Care suite and can support Hospice, Transitional Care, and Respite.

Suitable for:
• Recovery after illness, injury, or surgery
• Caregiver respite
• Support with chronic disease, symptom management, medication, and care planning

The suite accommodates a single person or a couple, is pet-friendly, and is fully furnished. It includes a kitchen, living room, bedroom, small patio, and in-suite washer/dryer. Photos of a suite are attached, and additional examples can be found in the Gallery on our website.

Includes:
• 24/7 support and care from an experienced team
• Meals from the main dining rooms
• Housekeeping and laundry services
• Recreation and engagement opportunities

Please note: There is no public funding for this stay. The cost is privately paid by the occupant at the government-set daily rate (which is known to be underfunded).

Adam, who’s one of the most sensitive and genuine people you’ll meet, did not know I had the photo, but also loving the moment, Sent his written reflections below.

We shared both with G.'s daughter, and she gave permission for us to post.

We use our social media to show what long-term care actually looks like — the real moments, the honesty, the compassion, and the steady work the team does every day.

Aging isn’t always easy, but dignity and good care are still very possible.

Our goal is to lessen fear, build trust, and show the human side of this work.

We love what we do, and we’re grateful you trust us with the people you love.

An extremely special moment today with G. I'm so thankful to have been there. He walked up, smiled at me, dragged the chair across from reception and sat down. His conversation at first was very challenged but he kept trying and I encouraged as anyone would with acknowledgement that I understood him. During conversation he paused and thought..his eyes squinted then pressed together. I could see his struggles. I affirmed and smiled, he continued. He had a very confusing conversation but it was sincere and he knew he was struggling, always looking into my eyes for confirmation of understanding. We laughed together like men. Thanks again for allowing me to have my position in connecting. It felt amazing that he chose to sit with me today.

I love connecting with the family and residents. But this one was over the top and made me realize and understand why I do what I do. To have that connection and trust is so rewarding..so so incredibly rewarding.
