This weekend, our team cared for a dog who tragically suffocated after getting her head stuck inside a chip bag. We’re sharing this because many loving, attentive pet owners don’t realize how dangerous snack bags can be. These accidents happen quickly, quietly, and far more easily than most of us would ever expect.

When a dog puts their head into a chip bag or similar packaging, it can create an airtight seal. As oxygen decreases, panic causes the bag to tighten. It can take only minutes. Even the most careful pet owners can experience accidents like this. Homes are busy. Pets are curious. Sometimes it only takes a brief moment.

Simple prevention steps:
🐾 Keep snack bags and food packaging out of reach
🐾 Tear or cut bags open before placing them in the garbage
🐾 Use secure, lidded trash bins
🐾 Be mindful of counter-surfing or curious pets

VI Fluffle is a volunteer-run rabbit rescue based in Nanoose Bay on Vancouver Island. Our mission is to educate the public, advocate for rabbit welfare, and provide safe haven for abandoned, injured, and surrendered rabbits.
We are supported by a dedicated network of volunteers spanning from Campbell River to Victoria. VI Fluffle operates entirely on donations and currently holds non-profit status, with charitable status in progress.
At any given time, we care for over 50 rabbits in foster homes and at our sanctuary. All rabbits in our care receive spay or neuter surgery, comprehensive health checks, and vaccination against Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease (RHD) prior to adoption.
In addition to rescue and adoption, we are proud to offer multiple RHD vaccine clinics across Vancouver Island throughout the year, providing accessible and affordable vaccinations to the public and their rabbits.
As a foster-based rescue, our ability to help rabbits depends entirely on the availability of foster homes. We are always in need of compassionate fosters to provide temporary care and a safe, loving environment while rabbits await their forever homes

February 1 - March 31 is dental month! Contact us today to learn more!

Dental disease is extremely common. By age 2, most dogs and cats already have some level of dental disease, even if they’re still eating normally.

😧 Bad teeth = more than bad breath. Dental disease causes pain, infection, and inflammation. Pets hide discomfort really well, so halitosis is often the only obvious sign.

🦷 Prevention saves teeth. Regular dental exams, cleanings, and home care can prevent extractions and advanced disease later on.

🏠 Home care matters. Brushing, dental diets, VOHC approved chews, and VOHC water additives all help reduce plaque and tartar.

😊 A healthy mouth improves quality of life. Pets with healthy teeth are more comfortable, more active, and often act years younger after dental treatment.

Reminder about our food drive for the CR food bank!!! We are trying to reach a goal of 250lbs and are sitting at about only 40lbs of food. This is only on until Dec 23! When you bring in a non expired donation you get to enter our prize basket which has a bunch of goodies including a gift certificate to put towards your pets visit!!! Come on down and bring your non perishable, non expired items!!!
