Last Friday, our Rec Rangers Group set off for another outdoor adventure by the Quinsam River — a space we love for its calming sounds, muddy trails, and glimpses of salmon returning home 🐟
But this time, nature had a surprise for us… THREE real bears appeared across the river, calmly walking along the shoreline.
We stayed safe and quiet — and our little explorers watched in awe.
At Spark, we believe in learning that’s real, sensory, and filled with curiosity. These moments aren’t just exciting — they help build focus, body awareness, self-regulation, and confidence in a way no classroom ever could.
🦋Nature teaches best.
🧡 And our kids are always ready to learn.
Spark moments happen when curiosity meets courage 🌿🧡
Thank you, nature, for the surprise guests — and thank you, Rec Rangers, for being brave, kind, and calm.

🐟This Weekend in Campbell River…

Looking for something fun (and wild!) to do with the family this weekend?
Head over to Quinsam River Hatchery for a walk along the river and a chance to spot salmon, eagles… and maybe even a bear or two! 🐻🦅
It’s a great way to slow down, explore nature, and spark some wild wonder 🌿✨

🗓️ When: Friday, September 6
🕗 Time: 8:00 am – 3:30 pm
📍 Where: 4217 Argonaut Rd, Campbell River
💰 Cost: Free
🧭 What: Self-guided outdoor experience along the river

🧠 Why It’s More Than Just a Walk
Outings like this do more than entertain — they offer a quiet, natural way for children to regulate their bodies, calm their minds, and engage their senses.
🧘‍♀️ The sounds of flowing water support sensory calm
👀 Watching salmon swim encourages focus and visual tracking
🚶‍♂️ Uneven trails help build balance and body awareness
🧠 Asking questions (“Where are they going?”) nurtures curiosity and confidence
At Spark, we see the power of these simple moments — the ones where children feel safe, connected, and free to explore at their own pace.
✨ Sometimes the best kind of learning doesn’t happen inside four walls.

⚠️ Bear Safety Tip
Bears are often active near the hatchery this time of year. Be “bear smart”:
🗣️ Walk with a friend and make noise
👣 Stick to open trails
📣 Speak calmly and stay visible
📸 Don’t forget your binoculars, water bottle, and curiosity!

You might have heard about the free weekly yoga happening in Robert Ostler Park, but did you know that youth can join, too? Teens 16 years and older can attend alone, but anyone as young as 12 can come with a responsible adult. These classes are designed to be gentle on the body and suitable for most beginners. So grab your yoga mat and head over to the park on Tuesdays between 5:30 and 6:30 pm ✨

We all know that yoga is excellent for improving strength, balance, and coordination, but it has so many positive effects on the mind, too. There’s evidence that yoga practices can help children and youth on the autism spectrum to become more resilient and develop their self-regulation skills. Wow!

Please note that these classes are weather-dependent. Finally, the last day of classes will be August 26th, and there will be an additional family-friendly class from 4:15 - 5 pm! There’s no minimum age, and children must be accompanied by a responsible adult. Check out the flyer to find out who’s teaching each and for contact info. And remember to breathe! 🧘

Wow, Campbell River is the place to be on Tuesdays! In addition to a number of other events we’ve shared, there’s the Teen Open Space at the VIRL. This is a great way to get out of the heat, try some new books or board games, and make some new friends. The library will even provide snacks, laptops, and art supplies! There’s really something for everyone 🤓📖

This kind of opportunity is especially great for shy teens because it gives them something to do in a novel social interaction ... not sure what to say? Talk about the board game you’re playing! We love board games because they give youth an opportunity to practice social skills in a low-stakes way, and it naturally sets them up to find common interests. It’s a fun way to flex your social thinking skills and make new relationships!

This event is for teens aged 13-18 and happens every Tuesday between 6 and 8 pm. For more information, contact the library at 250-287-3655. Have fun!

Head’s up for families travelling through Edmonton this summer: the Edmonton International Airport has opened their very own sensory room! You might notice some items that we have in our own sensory room at our 16th Avenue location – they’re kid-tested and approved! We think it’s so cool that the airport is making travel more inclusive and enjoyable. Here’s a little blurb from them:

“The sensory room at YEG is an immersive space designed to support passengers with sensory sensitivities, including autism, anxiety and other cognitive or neurodivergent conditions. It offers a peaceful retreat from the bustling airport environment for passengers to unwind in a calm and tranquil setting. The sensory room, developed in collaboration with Autism Edmonton, is located post-security in the Domestic-International Departures Lounge across from Gate 49.”

Wow, what a great idea! If you get a chance to check it out, let us know how it was ... happy travels 🛫🌞

There’s so much happening this summer in Campbell River! Every Sunday between 6:30 pm and 9:00 pm, there’ll be family friendly dance parties in Spirit Square 💃🕺 This free event will have a theme each week, and if you follow their page (https://fb.me/e/5XYsIpJYf), you can coordinate your outfits with the theme.

Dancing isn’t just a wonderful social and creative opportunity for children; it’s also a great way to develop their gross motor skills. Through dance, children have a blast while working on crossing the midline, balance, coordination, body awareness, and strength – wow! Don’t miss out on Boogie Nights in Spirit Square 🎶🎸🎹

Tomorrow is Canada Day, which means two things: Spark Therapy Group will be closed, and there’ll be a fireworks show! 🎆🎉 Follow this link for details about celebration: https://campbellrivernow.com/canada-day-simple/

Here’s some tips for enjoying Canada Day celebrations without the sensory overload:
If loud sounds are an issue 👂 try some noise-cancelling headphones or earplugs.
If bright sunlight is an issue 🌞 they might benefit from sunglasses (and sunscreen!)
If exposure to perfumes etc is an issue 👃 try offering a container with a cotton ball that has a few drops of essential oils to sniff.
Finally, consider using code words to signal needing the bathroom, wanting to go somewhere quieter, or leaving altogether. A quick code word can take some of the mental load off a child who’s already processing a lot.

Be safe and have fun! 🎇🎊
