🐶National Deaf Pet Awareness Week🐶

Not sure how to train a deaf dog? Teach them dog hand signals - doggy sign language! Signals such as stop, sit and come should be clear and easy to see from a distance ✋🏻👍🏻

Behaviour problems may be seen more often in deaf puppies and deaf dog training may need a bit more time and patience. But if you keep calm and positive, teaching hand signals and training a deaf dog can be very successful 🙏🏻

1️⃣ Pets can quickly get dehydrated in the heat. Always have fresh, cool water available and take breaks during play or walks to encourage drinking. Remember to limit their outdoor activity to avoid heatstroke.

2️⃣ If your pets are joining you on a road trip, use sunshades and cooling pads to protect them from the UV rays and heat. Take frequent breaks and never leave them unattended in a vehicle – yes, this needs to be repeated.

☀️Summer often means more time outdoors for both humans and pets. But with that outside fun comes a heavier load of environmental allergens like grass pollen, tree pollen, mold spores, and dust mites in the air.

🐕Dogs and🐈cats absorb allergens through their skin or even inhale them, which can provoke an immune response that triggers atopic dermatitis—a fancy name for allergy-driven skin inflammation.

They show us they’re suffering through:

1️⃣Compulsive grooming or skin irritation
2️⃣Chronic ear infections (especially in dogs)
3️⃣Constant licking or chewing at paws, groin, or base of tail
4️⃣Excessive shedding or patchy fur loss
5️⃣Scooting or rubbing on furniture
6️⃣Mysterious bald patches

If your pet is experiencing any of the above symptoms, give us a call and we would be happy to help📞 705-653-4541

Skunks can be cute from afar but watchout!

⚠️ Dangers:
1️⃣If skunk spray gets in the eyes, it can cause swelling and redness
2️⃣Damage the cornea (outer surface of the eye)
3️⃣It may cause temporary blindness
4️⃣If inhaled, dogs may experience respiratory irritation
5️⃣If in their mouth, it can cause nausea, drooling and vomiting
6️⃣In rare cases, after a heavy spray, severe anemia can develop a few hours to 24 hours after exposure and the dog may become lethargic, weak and have a lack of appetite

📞 Closely monitor for 1-3 days after exposure and take to a veterinarian immediately if these signs occur (please call ahead!!).

🫧🫧You can decontaminate the oils and odor by bathing them in a specific formula either homemade or from a pet store.

🏠Homemade: baking soda and hydrogen peroxide often works well, although the combo may alter the colour of a black dogs fur or bleach fabrics (⚠️)

🏪Store-bought supplies don't usually have bleaching agents, try out Thornell’s Skunk-Off or Nature's Miracle Skunk Odor Remover

🌳Keep your pet outside while washing them!

National Lost Pet Prevention and Hydration Month 💦🐶

Ways to prevent losing a pet: secure your yard with an invisible fence, use a leash and harness, add tags to their collars, strengthen their obedience training, spay/neuter and have them microchipped.

On hot days make sure they are getting enough water, especially if they are out and about! Also important is access to shade and air conditioning or fans when indoors.

Concrete and asphalt in direct sunlight can be really hard on your pet's paws. If you touch it and it's too hot for you, then it's too hot for them! To avoid the heat, go for walks before 9 AM or after 7 PM when the pavement is cooler or use grass, dirt trails, or shaded sidewalks to protect their paws.
