It’s National Volunteer Week, and, while we might be a little biased, we're pretty sure ours are the best. 💙

Every day, our volunteers show up with kindness, compassion, and a willingness to help wherever they’re needed. Their impact is felt in the small moments and the big ones, and we are incredibly grateful for everything they do.

Happy Administrative Professionals Day!

Today is all about recognizing the people who bring order behind the scenes. The organizers, problem-solvers, and calm voices who somehow make the impossible look routine. From keeping calendars in check to making sure the right people are in the right place at the right time (and importantly, with the right information), their impact is felt in every corner of the organization.

Thank you for everything you do, today and every day.

As part of Ontario’s participation in the International Delirium Awareness Day Flag Campaign, our team is proud to support efforts to raise awareness about delirium, what it is, how to recognize it, and how to prevent it.

We are committed to helping patients stay oriented, safe, and supported throughout their hospital stay. Education on delirium prevention is provided to all staff and shared with patients and their caregivers at admission, so everyone can play a role in early recognition and care.

Simple but meaningful changes have been made across our hospital. In the Emergency Department, tools like a Senior Care Comfort Cart, large patient-facing clocks, and easy-to-read bedside calendars help patients stay grounded and comfortable. On our Inpatient Unit, whiteboards support orientation, while early mobilization and therapeutic activities, led by our Restorative Care Team, help keep patients active and engaged. Additional support from our Behavioural Supports Ontario (BSO) RN ensures patients experiencing delirium receive the care they need.

By working together, we are creating a more senior-friendly environment and improving the care experience for older adults and their families.

As Lab Week comes to a close, we want to take one more moment to say thank you to our incredible lab team.

All week, we’ve had the chance to highlight just a small part of the work you do, but the impact you have is felt every single day.

From early mornings to late nights, behind the scenes and at the front line, we see you, and we thank you for everything you do to support patient care here at CMH.

All week, we’ve been celebrating the incredible work of our lab team, but today, we’re putting some of our other team members to the test.

How hard can lab terminology be?

Turns out… harder than it looks.

Our Emergency Department is currently seeing significantly higher-than-usual patient volumes. Those with non and less urgent conditions will experience significantly wait times.

Our teams are working hard to provide safe, timely care, with patients seen based on the urgency of their medical needs.

We know waiting can be difficult and we appreciate your patience, understanding, and kindness toward our staff and other patients.

If your concern is non-urgent, please review alternative care options before coming to the ED:

As Lab Week continues, today, we’re recognizing the clerks who help make it all work.

It’s easy to think of the lab as tests and results, but none of it works without the people keeping everything organized at the front desk.

Our lab clerks are at the centre of it all. They’re juggling information, managing requisitions, answering questions, checking-in patients, and making sure things move where they need to go, quickly and accurately. It’s constant coordination, attention to detail, and a whole lot of problem-solving.

If something needs to be tracked down, clarified, or kept on schedule, chances are a lab clerk is already on it.

An essential role that keeps everything running the way it should.

As Lab Week continues, today, we’re recognizing the leadership team that helps guide it all: Senior MLTs Tammy and Lisa, Lab Manager Zoe, and our Medical Lab Director Dr. O'Reilly.

From supporting day-to-day operations to navigating challenges behind the scenes, this team plays a key role in keeping the lab running smoothly. They provide guidance, share expertise, and help ensure quality and consistency across everything the lab does, including oversight of quality control, troubleshooting issues as they arise, and making sure nothing slips through the cracks.

Whether it’s mentoring staff, coordinating workflows, stepping in to cover when needed, or rolling up their sleeves to fix equipment when it breaks, their leadership is hands-on, focused and dependable.

As Lab Week goes on, we’re continuing to highlight the incredible people behind our lab, and today, we’re spotlighting our Medical Laboratory Technologists (MLTs).

MLTs are the ones analyzing samples, running complex tests, and ensuring every result is accurate and reliable. From bloodwork to more specialized diagnostics, their expertise plays a critical role in helping physicians make informed decisions about patient care.

It’s highly skilled, detail-oriented work that requires precision and problem-solving, because behind every result is a process that has to be exactly right.

While much of their work happens behind the scenes, the impact is felt across the entire hospital.

To help celebrate Lab Week, all week long, we’re highlighting the incredible people who make up our lab team. Today, we’re giving a big shoutout to our Medical Laboratory Assistants (MLAs).

MLAs are often the first step in the lab process. They’re the ones collecting samples, preparing and processing specimens, ensuring everything is labelled, handled, and delivered exactly as it should be. It’s fast-paced, detail-driven work where accuracy matters, because every step sets the stage for reliable results.

They’re moving between departments, supporting patients, and keeping things flowing so testing can happen quickly and safely.

It might not always be visible, but it’s essential.
