Plantar Fasciitis
Plantar Fasciitis is an overuse condition resulting in inflammation of the plantar fascia.
Located on the bottom of foot.
Causes of Plantar Fasciitis
-Overuse due to overtraining, poor technique, running on hard surfaces, or prolonged standing.
-Poor Biomechanics
-Short and tight calf muscles
-Improper footwear that are worn out, too flexible, too stiff, or does not adequate arch support. If you wear work boots, like steel toe, you should change them every 6 months.
-Weight gain, including pregnancy, which stresses the plantar fascia.
Symptoms
-Plantar Fasciitis can happen in one or both feet.
-Symptoms range from mild to severe.
-It can happen with no history of injury or trauma.
-Overtime the plantar fascia is unable to repair itself and is partially torn from the heel.
-Lots of inflammation, adhesions, fibrosing and swelling in the plantar fascia.
-Pain occurs with the first few steps after non-weight-bearing eg. when getting out of bed in the morning or sitting for long periods of time.
Special Test
-Windless test
Self care
-Acute stage (beginning stage) rest, ice using a frozen water bottle under the foot and rolling it.
-Chronic (later stage) rest from aggravating activities, use warm moist heat then ice using a frozen water bottle under the foot and rolling it. Return to an activity gradually beginning with non weight bearing activities like swimming or bicycling. Strengthening using a towel on the floor and using your toes to scrunching up the towel.
