Linda “Jan” Marler
Aug. 31,1944 – Feb. 27, 2026

It is with profound sadness that we announce our sweet, kind and gentle mom, Jan, Gram, passed away peacefully with her family by her side on February 27, 2026, in Lamont at the age of 81.

Jan married David in 1963 and soon after they moved to their farm in Ross Creek where they raised a family and she stayed until 2024. Mom was very active on the farm alongside dad in all aspects of farm life. She stayed home until her kids grew and moved on, then she enjoyed working at the Lodge in Tofield and later the bakery at the IGA. Mom was a gentle soul, beautiful on the inside and out. Her eyes lit up and she had the biggest smile for the friends and family that called or visited.

Jan was an exceptional cook and baker. Dee and Brent always had handmade treats every school day and fondly remember the warm sweets they received when they got off the bus. Our mom loved Christmas and will forever be remembered for her three different kinds of the ‘best’ shortbread that she generously shared with family and friends. She took pride in her yard and garden and her flowers were always beautiful and well cared for. Mom spent several years crocheting and making blankets for her kids, and she was a talented seamstress, often sewing clothes for Brent and Deanne, making jeans and their winter jackets. She loved music and was a talented piano player and singer with a beautiful voice. She sang at weddings and even had her own record.

In 2024, she moved from the farm to Morley Young Manor in Lamont where she was still able to have a small garden on her patio. She enjoyed coffee every morning with other residents and actively participated in floor curling, musical entertainment and shared cherished stories from her years of fun with her fast ball family, curling bonspiels and being a part of the Ross Creek community.

She will forever be remembered by her children, Deanne (Jamie), Brent (Pauline) and her younger sisters Cathie (Dave), Barb and Lois (Doug). She is survived by her grandchildren Ashley (Ricky), Aaron (Sasha), Kayla, Braeden (Emma) and Justin (Maggie). Her great-grandchildren Ethan, Khloe, Beau, Alix, Mia, Ellie, Weston and Charlotte as well as her sister and brothers-in-law, many nieces, nephews, neighbours and friends. Jan is predeceased by her husband David Marler and her mother and father Isobel and Jack Bailey.

Her family would like to thank the staff at the Lamont Hospital for their exceptional kindness and compassion in Mom’s final days and thank you to all the family and friends who have offered condolences and support. It is very appreciated.

A celebration of Jan’s life will take place in the summer as Mom loved the sunny, warm days.

Ervine Kading of Tofield, Alberta, passed away at St. Mary's Hospital in Camrose, Alberta on February 24, 2026, at the age of 83.

Ervine was born in Hanna, Alberta, and grew up on a farm near Scapa, Alberta, where he attended school. Although German was his first language, he adapted quickly to his studies. Growing up on a farm instilled in him a lifelong value for hard work. His career began at a Grain Elevator in Stettler, the same town where he met his wife and lifelong love at the Club Café.

After they married, the couple moved to Belloy, Alberta, where they welcomed their first child. Unfortunately due to health concerns being a Grain Elevator manager wasn’t to be, and they returned to Stettler where his daughter was born. Ervine later found his path working as a yardman for several lumber yards before moving to Tofield, where an opportunity came to own and operate a service station alongside his family. Following his time at the service station, he remained active in the Tofield community, taking on odd jobs and helping anyone who needed it.

In his spare time, Ervine enjoyed fishing, camping, boating, and traveling across Canada, with favorite trips including visits to British Columbia and New Brunswick. He especially loved fishing and having wiener roasts at Dried Meat Lake with his daughter and son-in-law. For Ervine, family trips and holidays were cherished opportunities to connect with friends and relatives.

He is survived by his children, Bradley and Sylvia, their spouses, Ro Ann and Glen, his grandchildren, Evan, Roland, Raven, and Raphael. He was predeceased by his wife, Beverly; his parents, William(Bill) and Katharine; and his brother, Ben.

At his request, no service will be held.

It is with heavy hearts and deep gratitude for a life well lived that we announce the passing of John Shanks of Tofield, Alberta, on February 18, 2026, at the age of 91 years.

John lived a long and meaningful life defined by hard work, quiet strength, and unwavering love for his family. He was a man who believed in lending a helping hand, sharing a good story, and appreciating the simple pleasures — a visit with loved ones, time spent outdoors, and the comfort of home.

He will be lovingly remembered by his children: Debbie, Larry, Lyle, Denise, Sherry, and Kelly, along with their families. John’s legacy continues through his 15 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great-grandchildren, each of whom brought him immense pride and joy. Nothing meant more to him than family, and he cherished every gathering, milestone, and memory created together.

John was known for his steady presence, warm smile, and the wisdom that comes from a life rich in experience. He taught by example — the value of honesty, perseverance, and kindness. His family will forever carry forward the lessons he shared and the love he gave so freely.

Though he will be deeply missed, John’s spirit lives on in the stories told around kitchen tables, in the laughter of his grandchildren, and in the strong roots he planted for generations to come. He leaves behind a legacy of love, resilience, and family that will never be forgotten.

A private family service will take place at a later date.

Dorothy Marlene Swanson, 76, peacefully passed away on February 12, 2026, surrounded by family and friends, and a host of angels to take her home.

Born on August 26, 1949, in Provost to Edith and Raymond Downing, Dorothy was one of five children. She grew up on a family farm north of Camrose. When her father passed away in 1964, the family moved into Camrose, where Dorothy attended Camrose Composite High School. During her Grade 12 year, she began working at AGT as a telephone operator, demonstrating her strong work ethic and independence at a young age. Dorothy was married to Marvin Swanson for 33 years. Together they made their home in Camrose and raised three children.

Dorothy pursued her passion for hairdressing, completing her schooling at Marvel College in Grande Prairie. She owned and operated a salon in Valleyview before later opening a salon in Camrose. She was highly esteemed by her clients and employees.

She moved to Edmonton in 2004. She worked various jobs, finding joy in service to others as a private health care aid. The families she assisted appreciated her help and willingness to go the extra mile. In Edmonton she also attended various churches and met many new friends. Church in the Vine was her home church and she spoke highly of her Pastor and church family there. They showed a great amount of support to her especially these last months as she battled cancer.

Dorothy was the very definition of selfless love. She has always put others first - quietly, faithfully, without ever asking for recognition. Her heart has been a doorway to Jesus for so many, leading countless people to faith simply by the way she lived: full of grace, truth and unwavering compassion. One of her favorite sayings was, “It’s never right to do wrong and never wrong to do right.” She lived those words daily.

Dorothy carried a positive outlook, greeting others with a warm smile and generous heart. Her smile could light up a room, and there was a glow about her that could only come from one place - the love of Jesus shining through her.

She met many people throughout the years, and her genuine kindness and desire to reflect Jesus in her everyday life made a lasting impact. To Dorothy, no one was ever too small or insignificant. She believed the best about people. She chose kindness. She chose forgiveness. She chose love.

Her greatest joy was her family. She cherished every possible moment with her children and grandchildren, pouring into their lives with unconditional love, encouragement, and prayer.

She is lovingly remembered by her children: Steve Swanson; Marty Swanson (Laura); and Viveca Solbrekken (John); her cherished grandchildren: Isaac Swanson, Jacob Swanson, Zane Solbrekken, and Sienna Solbrekken; her sister Linda Knipe; her brother Don Downing; as well as extended family and many dear friends whose lives she deeply touched.

Dorothy was predeceased by her parents, Edith and Raymond; her sister Carol; her brother David; and her brother-in-law Ken Knipe.

Dorothy will be deeply missed and forever cherished. Her life was a testimony of faith, love, service, and unwavering devotion to God and family.

A funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 21, 2026 at Weber's Mount Pleasant Chapel in Camrose.

Our Story

Being a family owned, operated, and independent funeral home means our policies and practice are not dictated to us by any corporate office or shareholders. This allows us the freedom to serve our families in the same manner as we would wish to be served. We are grateful for the positive response we have experienced within the communities we serve and our pledge is to continue to provide the service that merits the confidence you place in us.

Our story begins with Marvin who started his career in 1971 at Southside Memorial in Edmonton. He moved to Camrose where he was employed by Arnold Hoveland at Hoveland Funeral Home in Camrose. When the Hoveland Funeral Home was sold Marvin moved back to Tofield where he ran the family farm and also built Tofield Funeral Home.

In 2002 we purchased the Mount Pleasant Funeral Chapel (formerly Hoveland Funeral Home) in Camrose. Marvin’s sons Chad, Tyler and Layne all work at the funeral home.

Marvin was elected by his peers in the funeral profession to the Alberta Funeral Service Regulatory Board. AFSRB regulates educational standards, monitors performance standards, licensing and investigates consumer complaints.
