“Yes, the Yoga system, the individual-oriented approach, is tedious, more elaborate, and more time consuming. But, definitely it is specific, more precise, the most comprehensive - and every human being deserves this.” Dr. N. Chandrasekaran M.B.B.S., Dip in Yoga (KYM)
Yoga has been defined in many ways as union with wholeness, remembering our source, and going beyond mind to abide in our natural state of pure awareness. While the purpose of classical yoga is to manifest our total potential, yoga therapy is concerned with clearing symptoms of disease and freeing individuals from pre-disposing factors which lead to their imbalances.
First we pacify and relieve symptoms of the presenting problem (insomnia, hypertension, low back pain) and then we go deeper to address the cause of that problem, restore balance, and strengthen the whole constitution to prevent future occurrences. The tools of yoga are very powerful and should be chosen carefully to create a desired effect in a specific area of the body, to a very unique individual. Yoga should be applied in an individualized way with precision like surgery. A doctor would never prescribe the same treatment to 20 patients in the same room and in that way we should seek out one-on-one yoga treatment if we want transformation as opposed to temporary relief.
Of course, weekly drop-in group yoga classes have a essential and beneficial place in health maintenance and fostering a sense of community. However, there comes a time when folks desire to develop a deeply personal home practice or are confronted with a health challenge, are healing from injury, illness or psychological trauma which is requires one-on-one observation and guidance.
