Why I love the work I do. Hands heal.

“Grandma, how do you cope with pain?”

“With your hands, honey. If you do it with your mind instead of relieving the pain, it toughens even harder.”

“With your hands grandma?”

“Yes, our hands are the antennae of our soul. If you move them; knitting, cooking, painting, playing or sinking them into the ground, you send care signs to the deepest part of you and your soul lights up because you’re paying attention to it. Then signs of pain will no longer be necessary.”

“Hands are really that important?”

“Yes my daughter. Think of babies: they start to know the world through the touch of their hands. If you look at the hands of old people, they tell you more about their life then any body part. Everything that is done by hand is said to be done with the heart. Because it’s really like this: hands and heart are connected. Masseurs know well: when they touch someone with their hands, they create a deep connection. It is precisely from this connection that healing comes. Think of lovers: when they touch their hands, they make love in a more sublime way.”

“My hands grandma.... how long I haven’t used them like this!”

“Move them, my love. Begin to create with them and everything within you will begin to move. The pain will not pass away. And instead what you do with them will become the most beautiful masterpiece and it won’t hurt anymore. Because you have been able to transform its essence.”

[ Update ]
Hey everyone! At six months pregnant with my first little one, my time at Etana Wellness is slowly coming to a pause (for now, I'll be back after baby is born!).

What this means is that there are only so many available appointments this August left! Book online as soon as you can to reserve your spot!

Come September I will only be taking my return clients by email bookings at echo@etanawellness.com where there is availability.

We have grown a lot at Etana Wellness this year and there are many amazing therapists who have joined our team. It will be sad to go, but also an exciting new chapter for me to embark on moving forward.

Please come visit me before I go! Email or FB message for additional details or to book. (You can also book online for this coming month at Etanawellness.com until the end of August).

It's really common for us to have some level of stress, especially considering we are all navigating a pandemic.

Craniosacral therapy is another wonderful way to release stress trapped in the body and bring your nervous system back into a state of rest and digest. Giving your nervous system a break can result in a plethora of other wonderful benefits to healing.

We do craniosacral therapy! In fact, it's one of my favorite sessions that clients book in with me.

Book yours today!

What breaks my heart?
Watching people suffer. When people are in chronic pain. When people grieve with no resolution, or find they become trapped in the darkness with no light. It breaks my heart to see the animals, the trees, and people living in disharmony with one another...

Since I was very young I was gifted with healing hands.

Being a holistic practitioner has been an honoring and rewarding path that I've been walking. Every other "job" or "career" I pursued seemed empty and never lasted long. Yet, here I am, six years into my practice-- loving every day that I get to spend sharing with others the beauty, health, wellness, and freedom, that I too aim to cultivate in my everyday life, that I see within our world.

Thank you for giving me permission to work with you.

Clients ask me all of the time, "HOW often should I get a massage?"
If you are dealing with chronic every day pain or a recent injury, you should go once a week until it becomes manageable.
Many clients will automatically resort to once a month treatments although they deal with almost daily discomfort.
Massage therapy is less effective if you are not implementing a healthy routine. I always suggest that clients come more frequently at the beginning in order to get them into a position where they have better range of motion, flexibility, and much less pain and then they can progress to maintenance massages which generally occur once a month.
When people ask me how often I go, I tell them that I go about once to twice a month (or I combine massage with physiotherapy and chiropractic care), and increase how often I go if I am experiencing regular pain and discomfort.
I believe that the healthy functioning of my body is a top priority as it's the only one I get this lifetime.
How often are you going for massage?

[ Taking a step back from "progress" ] when dealing with an injury can bring up all sorts of sensations and beliefs around productivity, around moving forward, and inadequacy around not meeting our goals.

A lot of times when I see athletes or other folks in the gym, on the track, etc. Become injured, they often forget that they need to be serious about recovery and when they feel they are recovered, they can't just jump back into where they last were with their progress.

Going back to square one can be challenging and even feel like defeat. We need to change the story around "starting over" in our fitness and health journey in order to be our best self.

It's not a loss of progress to meet your body where it truly is at. It's a change of direction. When we take a step back and work on regaining the strength, endurance, and stability we lost during healing our injury, we give our bodies the best opportunity to bounce back to where we were before the injury.

Don't be afraid to reduce your lifting capacity (weight training), reduce your workout and fitness times, and go back to the basics to build from a reliable foundation.

In the long run this will help prevent re-injury and compensation patterns (which can lead to pain, inflammation, and a higher likeliness of hurting yourself again).

If you find that you continue to feel an old injury rise its ugly head with your activities, seek professional help. See your massage therapist, physio, and/or chiropractor to learn more on how to get back to doing what you love without the pain.

[ DID YOU KNOW... ]
Poor posture can put a significant strain on your body? Specifically, the sedentary, head down computer gazing, television watching, phone texting actions we do every day adds unnecessary force on cervical spine. This postural imbalance is the culprit for that sore neck and shoulder pain, those pesky headaches, and that burning sensation after a long day at work between your shoulder blades-- where everything feels SO TIGHT!
Manual therapists call this the "Upper Crossed Syndrome", and I see it all of the time in my clients who get stuck at their work desks or spend large amounts of time on their devices.
[ What's Happening...? ]
Well, muscles of the back of your neck and your upper/mid back become weak and lengthened (pulled "TIGHT", but this isn't where the actual hypertension is!) and they stop communicating to your nervous system. The muscles in the front of your neck, and your chest are the exact opposite-- over-active, chronically shortened, and much stronger, pulling your head and shoulders forward and throwing your body out of alignment.
This creates disaster and can lead to injuries and further complications down the road.
[ How Can I Prevent This...? ]
Learning about proper posture and body mechanics is a must! But more importantly, re-training your body's muscles to work together by loosening up chronically shortened/tight muscles and waking up those over-lengthened and weak muscles, is the best step towards a healthier alignment.
ONE of the BEST ways to correct Upper Crossed Syndrome is to visit a well-trained massage therapist. Your massage therapist can support you in loosening up the tension pulling you out of place, reconnecting weak under-active muscles with your nervous system, and then showing you what you can do at home to keep your body in its best posture possible.

How Heavy is Your Head?

Book with me today Etana Wellness, and discover how you can reduce and/or eliminate pain and tension for your hard working shoulders and neck.

Why do we seek changes? Because something in our life is out of balance. Often times when people consider making changes within their lives, they become overwhelmed. "I couldn't possibly do that," they say, "it's just too much work".
But aren't you already overwhelmed with your life and isn't that why you even considered change?

One step at a time helps us to achieve the goal.
When we are trying to turn our lives around from lethargy, illness, negativity, it requires a foundation for growth. Start small-- like cutting out processed foods or carbonated drinks, or spending some time outside soaking up the sun. Building a foundation of growth that is strong enough to support our change takes the overwhelm out of our actions.

Next thing you know, you're living the life that you truly want.

The Crone is a woman who no longer menstruates physically, she is now a fully embodied wise woman. With many moons behind her and the experience she has acquired, she can now turn her attention to being a guide for the young. Being free in her body - no longer worried about pregnancy, pretense or deep fluctuations in hormones, she has come to a serene place of acceptance...an embodied dance with the rhythms and energetics of life.

I have been guided by grandmothers with silver hair as magnificent as the moonlight for a very long time in my dreams, it has helped me develop a keen appreciation for the Crone, it has allowed me to see aging as an exquisite and delicate gift. It has helped me make healthy choices in the now and embrace with subtle anticipation the day when I too will be a grandmother to the children of our world.

In ancient times and cultures, the Crone was revered. The Crone was consulted for matters of importance and well being of tribes. Children and grown alike would come for advice and storytelling to the skirts of the Crone. The gray hair was looked at as stripes of honor and the wrinkles as badges of courage and experience. When a woman’s blood flow would stop coming it was said she no longer needed it, as she had accumulated the wisdom of the moon enough to embody it and invite it to stay. These wise women understood the importance of death and renewal at such a cellular level they no longer needed to be reminded every month.

In todays culture, the Crone is in great danger of being crushed. In a society where faster, better, younger is the theme and tattooed into our consciousness every day… The elders are very often overlooked and seen as nuisance, annoying, slow, their beauty is smudged over and often shoved into care homes or confined to a bedroom in the house, Google has now usurped the throne of the wise one.

We see Maiden archetype everywhere- the endless pursuit of youth.. From a multibillion dollar market of beauty products to the movie screens.. Everyone wants to be young, plump and fresh. We see the Mother archetype- the caring loving mother and as Lara Owen mentions in her book, although limited- it is even revered in religion.

But the Crone...where is she?

She is hidden, she is stashed away… all that power hidden in her belly and nowhere to go. She has been pushed to abhor her post menopausal state, as though it is a condemnation rather than a blessing, as if not being able to birth children is now a curse that spills inward into a barren womb.. All that wisdom rejected, unacknowledged, dishonored in exchange for the pursuit of staying young and ‘fertile’ only to be ridiculed and mocked by a society that in paradoxical cruelty repudiates the Crone as well.

No, the Crone cannot expect to be accepted without first accepting herself, knowing that her bones are indeed each day becoming more and more one with the earth...

The silenced Crone cannot demand a place in a society where she too has helped exile this archetype.

This is why we need to speak of Her, the Crone- the holy guide that lives and will one day emerge from you and when it does… you will have a choice: will you let her in and feast on the banquet of your holy life experience or will you shut the door in her face and leave her out to starve in hopes that the maiden and mother, whom have left, will someday come back.

Many times I have wanted to write about the Crone even create for it but I am held back by the misleading belief that I have to be one to speak of it.
‘No more...' my sleeping crone has whispered, ‘you must begin to pave the way for my visit.. planting seeds along the path that may bloom for my homecoming.’

Resting and gestating in me, she is harnessing strength to come and live fully, to guide, to teach, to dance, to remind, to slow me down, to make me softer, to be reflected on my skin and in my gaze when the time comes.

So in the meantime, I will speak of the Crone to our children and to anyone that will hear - I will honor the magnificently wise women I am surrounded by, sisters hiding their beauty behind veils. I will remind them, I will whisper, I will nudge, I will invite….

‘Take off your veil! You are holy sacred wise woman, you are here, you are a message… now is your time to guide!’
