Bow Valley Palliative

Bow Valley Palliative We depend on our community volunteers and fundraising initiatives.

Providing palliative and grief supports within the Bow Valley and Improving the end of life experience for individuals and their families following a life-changing diagnosis. In the spring of 2014, a group was called together under the leadership of Lynn Cooper with the goal of establishing a hospice in the Bow Valley. The group continued to meet regularly and the vision expanded to include the de

velopment of a “compassionate community”, working alongside the current health and social services to support those with a life-limiting illness, and their families, throughout their journey. Under the group’s direction, the “Palliative Care Society of the Bow Valley” (PCSBV) was conceived. Development of a compassionate community soon grew to include the idea of constructing a palliative care house in Canmore for Bow Valley communities. The PCSBV is now a vibrant registered charity with a new Board of Directors charting that course for the future.

Many people think it is only available in hospitals — but in reality, palliative care can be provided in many settings, including at home, in hospices, long-term care, and within the community.

It’s about meeting people where they are and ensuring comfort, support, and quality of life throughout their journey.

This morning, our friend Joni Mcneely, Chair of the Wheatland & Area Hospice Society, spoke on CBC’s Calgary Eyeopener about the new residential hospice the society is raising funds to build in Strathmore.

“One of our goals is to create a place where families don’t have to travel so much. There’s quality palliative care right in our local community,” shares Joni. “Residential hospices are a distinct model of care. It’s not long-term care. Patients typically require advanced symptom management and hands-on support, and wrap-around services for themselves and their families. These patients normally have very complex medical needs, and hospice provides an interdisciplinary team with deep experience in palliative care.”

Access to this level of care is crucial for smaller and rural communities, including those in the Bow Valley area. Our vision aligns with Wheatland & Area Hospice Society to create a dedicated space where individuals and families can receive support, connection, comfort and care close to home.
