Nerve Pain & Your Back
What Are Spinal Nerves?
- Communication cables between your back and your legs.
- Carry signals for movement, sensation, and reflexes.
What Can Go Wrong?
- Nerves can get pinched or irritated by discs, joints, or swelling.
- Inflammation can cause pain even without compression.
- Sometimes pain travels into the leg — often called sciatica.
Typical Symptoms
- Sharp, shooting, or burning pain down the leg.
- Tingling, numbness, or pins and needles in the foot or thigh.
- Possible weakness in the leg or foot muscles.
- Pain worse with sitting, bending, or coughing.
What Helps?
- Keep moving — short walks are better than long sitting.
- Gentle core and posture exercises.
- Nerve gliding (“flossing”) stretches guided by your provider.
- Good posture and workstation setup.
- NUCCA care, soft tissue therapy, and gentle mobilization can help nerves calm down.
Long-Term Prevention
- Build strong core and hip muscles.
- Keep hips and upper back flexible to offload the lower back.
- Stay active with walking, swimming, or cycling.
- Manage sleep, stress, and body weight.
Remember: Most nerve pain improves with time and the right care. Movement, posture, and gentle treatment help nerves settle and restore confidence in activity.
