Happy International Women’s Day. Today we’re celebrating the incredible women who make up the heart of Origin, from our residents to our team, and the wider community of women who surround and support us.

It’s a beautiful reminder of the generations of women who shape our lives, those who came before us, those beside us today, and those still to come. Their strength, kindness, and stories continue to inspire us every day.

We love to celebrate here at Origin, and we were so grateful for the opportunity to mark the Lunar New Year together.

We welcomed the Year of the Horse with great food, great company, and a little hands-on learning. The celebration included a shared dinner followed by a cooking class with Nicole, who showed everyone how to make fresh salad rolls from scratch. There were plenty of laughs, lots of rolling and tasting, and a wonderful sense of togetherness throughout the evening.

The Horse symbolizes energy, strength, and a spirited outlook on life, qualities that feel especially fitting for the vibrant community here at Origin. Here’s to a year ahead filled with good health, happiness, and prosperity.

Meet Don.

Born in Calgary and shaped by the Rockies, Don spent years working along the Icefields Parkway, from Saskatchewan Crossing to the Columbia Icefield and Peyto Glacier with Environment Canada. He and his wife were among the very first graduates of the University of Calgary’s brand-new computer science program before following their wanderlust to Europe in 1985, building careers and a life abroad.

In January 2025, Don and his wife chose Origin for their next chapter.

Don will tell you not to underestimate anyone. Behind every resident is a lifetime of stories, careers, adventures, and courage. At Origin, he’s found friendship, connection, and community, from time spent in the pub with neighbours to walks along Spring Creek with Ha Ling Peak overhead.

For Don, home is that feeling when you look up at the mountains and just know.

In the spirit of Valentine’s Day, we’re celebrating a love story that has stood the test of time.

Barb and Al are marking an incredible 65 years of marriage this month. Both spent their careers working in the school system, and their story began in the simplest way. One day, Al asked Barb for her phone number. She said it quickly. He remembered every single digit.

More than six decades later, that small moment turned into a lifetime together.

“You go through a lot of stuff together,” Al says. “She’s stuck with me through thick and thin, and I love her.”

Originally from Appleton, they now call MorningStar House at Origin home. And while they may not have been in the Bow Valley long, Al says he wouldn’t want to live anywhere else. The mountains have captured his heart almost as completely as Barb did.

Happy 65 years, Barb and Al. Thank you for reminding us what enduring love looks like.

A look back at Valentine’s at Origin ❤️

We started the celebrations early with an afternoon of cookie decorating, sprinkles everywhere and plenty of creativity at the table.

Then came our Valentine’s Tea Party, complete with live music by Paul Stoia, lots of dancing, and so much laughter. Each resident received a handwritten card from our team, and dinner featured a special Valentine’s menu made with care.

We even had the sweetest little visitor stop by with balloons and cards, which truly made the day extra special.

It was a week full of love, connection, music, and sweet moments shared together.

Our annual trip to Banff to see the snow sculptures is always a favourite, and this year didn’t disappoint. We kicked things off with lunch at the Silver Dragon, where a fortune cookie reminded us to “explore an unpaved road with a new friend,” which felt like the perfect theme for a day spent together.

This year’s sculptures celebrate the incredible athleticism found in nature, and sharing the experience made it even more special.

INDEPENDENT LIVING

Independent living is for seniors who are able to live on their own, but want the convenience of communal living. Many studies have proven the benefits of living in a community as people age, and how it positively contributes to active aging and living. Independent living communities, like Origin Active Living Communities, provide a variety of amenities and services designed to nurture the mind, body, and spirit.

ASSISTED LIVING

Assisted Living communities are designed for seniors who are able to remain independent and active, but need a helping hand. While residents can use all of a community’s amenities just as independent living residents, they also have the added services of assistance with the activities of daily living.

MEMORY CARE

Memory care communities meet the needs of individuals living with memory impairment such as Alzheimer’s Disease, a form of dementia. They offer a secure environment, designed to engage and care for people living with memory impairments. Similar to assisted living, they offer resort-style amenities and services, assistance with the activities of daily living, but with the added benefits of around the clock care, specially trained staff, and activities specifically designed for engagement.

RESPITE CARE

Respite care is temporary, short-term care provided when family caregivers cannot care for a loved one. This type of care can be used in case of an emergency, but is primarily used as a support system for family caregivers. Caring for a loved one is a rewarding, but difficult job – leaving little time for personal time. Many family caregivers experience something called caregiver burnout, and need time away from their responsibilities – whether it’s for work, vacation, or just a time to themselves.
