February is Recreation Therapy Month, and we are honoured to share Rhea’s story.

Rhea, Life Enrichment Manager at Origin at Spring Creek, returned to school to pursue her Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation with support from scholarships funded by the Canmore Hospital Foundation and the Ladies Auxiliary. Origin at Spring Creek, longtime friends and supporters of the Foundation, continues to help strengthen care across our community.

With more than 15 years of experience, Rhea uses recreation, leisure, and play as tools to support independence, well-being, and meaningful connection. Recreation Therapy is about far more than activities. It is about helping individuals living with illness or disability experience purpose, creativity, and joy.

When asked about the best moment in her career, she remembered a woman holding a silk scarf her husband had made after his stroke. It was the first gift he had given her in over ten years. A simple recreation program became a moment of dignity, love, and reconnection.

This is the impact of investing in people. When we support education and professional growth, we strengthen care. We create space for moments that matter.

We are proud to support professionals like Rhea and community partners like Origin who help adults age with independence, compassion, and enrichment. Watch the full story, co-created with Kristy Wolfe, now: http://www.canmorehospitalfoundation.com/stories/video-digital-story-by-rhea

There are some people who leave such a profound mark that they shape an entire community. Pat Grayling was one of those people for the Canmore Hospital Foundation, for the hospital, and for all of Canmore.

Simply saying “thank you” could never fully capture what Pat gave over decades of quiet, steadfast, and heartfelt service. She wasn’t just a volunteer or a leader, she was a friend, a mentor, and a constant presence who made every space kinder, calmer, and more connected simply by being there.

In this story, we’ve tried to offer a small window into the breadth of Pat’s contributions, her spirit of generosity, and the legacy she leaves behind at the Canmore Hospital and across the Bow Valley. It’s also a reminder of the kind of person we can aspire to be, someone who shows up, cares deeply, and gives freely.

We invite you to take a moment to read her story and reflect on the incredible life she lived and her immeasurable impact on this community. Thank you, Pat. You are so greatly missed.

There are some people whose impact on a community is so deep, so steady, and so quietly transformative that it’s difficult to imagine the place without them. Pat Grayling was one of those people. Your contribution supports ongoing improvements to our hospital spaces, access to modern medical equipment, meaningful patient and family programs, and the resources our dedicated health care teams need to do their best work. Every donation, in every amount, creates immediate impact while helping secure the future of care in our community.

If you are considering a year-end donation, now is a meaningful moment to give. Your support helps us continue caring for patients, supporting staff, and building a healthier Bow Valley today and into the future.

A Holiday Ode from the Canmore Hospital Foundation to You

In winter’s quiet, when the valley glows,And starlight settles on the mountain snows,We pause with thanks for hearts that never rest,For those who give our community their best.

To doctors, nurses, caregivers each night,Who meet the unknown with steady hands and light—Through long overnight hours, calm and kind,You carry strength that heals both heart and mind.

To hospital staff, seen and unseen,Whose care keeps hope alive and systems running clean,Your skill, patience, and compassion trueAre gifts this season—and the whole year through.

To volunteers who offer time and care,A listening ear, a presence always there,And to the Ladies Auxiliary, steadfast and strong,Your generosity has lifted us for so long.

And to our donors—quiet champions near and far,You strengthen every act of care, just as you are.Your belief in local health, your kindness, your trust,Turn hope into action, and compassion into “we must.”

This season, Bow Valley, we gather in thanks,For every hand that gives, every role fulfilled.Because of you, our hospital is more than walls—It is community, resilience, and goodwill.
May the holidays bring warmth, peace, and cheer,And may you know how deeply you are valued here.

With gratitude!

We were honoured to welcome Judy and Herman Cooper for a tour of the Cancer Care unit at Canmore General Hospital.

Judy and Herman are long-time, deeply committed supporters of the Canmore Hospital Foundation, and their generosity has made a meaningful and lasting impact across our hospital. Their support of the Cancer Care Program, along with their continued investment in the Foundation’s Scholarship Program, plays an important role in strengthening both patient care and the future of healthcare in our community.

Beyond their financial contributions, Judy and Herman are true champions of the hospital. Judy serves on the Scholarship Committee and is an avid volunteer, while Herman brings comfort and joy to long-term care residents through his love of music and singing.

Their ongoing support is essential as we continue to provide compassionate, high-quality cancer care close to home. Because of donors like the Coopers, patients and families in the Bow Valley can access care where it matters most, in their own community.

We are deeply grateful for their generosity, their time, and their unwavering commitment to local healthcare.

The Canmore & Area Health Care Foundation

The Canmore & Area Health Care Foundation is a charitable organization in support of the Canmore General Hospital.

YOU CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE

We’ve grown. Our roots lie in the Canmore General Hospital, originally founded by the local mining community and run by its volunteers. We’re bigger now, serving Canmore and the Bow Valley, but one thing has not changed: we care for our community and our guests. The hospital’s atmosphere of a small-town, community-focused space is good for locals and visitor too.

As a small hospital, though, funding is hard to come by. Your thoughtful and generous donation will help us support Canmore General Hospital’s patients and caregivers now and for years to come.
