Italy is a country located in southern Europe, known for its rich history, culture and art. With so much to discover, it’s no wonder that Italy continues to be a popular tourist destination for many people around the world. So in 2024, when I was approached by a friend who was interested in going on a herbal adventure, and she wanted our whole hiking group of 6 to go, I naturally said yes, I didn’t really know much about herbs and their uses beyond cooking and tea, but I was interested in knowing more about herbal medicine and what herbs can do for overall health.
So we headed over to Italy! We met up with the organizers of the trip, Natalie and Richard, at the Florence Airport, boarded the private bus and then we were on our way to Villa Certano, a 450 year old 100 acre villa. Upon arrival, we were greeted by our Tuscany Herbal Adventure educator Penelope Beaudrow RH.
For the first week, our home base was the villa with Natalie leading stretching, pilates and yoga, Penny leading herbal walks and teaching us about the healing power of the plants around us, Richard preparing the wonderful meals, and Annalisa (the villa owner) giving us the tours of her vineyards, olive trees, her 1200 year old church, winery, formal rose garden and more!
We had Tuscan herbalists come and teach us about their plants and herbs, we dined at authentic Tuscany restaurants, we toured lavender farms, wineries, an essential oil farm and distillery, soaked in healing mineral waters at a spa, shopped at an outdoor market in Siena, gave each other facials, enjoyed botanical gardens, visited Sienas Duomo (cathedral), travelled to Florence for the day, toured Boboli gardens, admired herbal museums and apothecary museums.
We then travelled to Sansepoicro and Aboca and toured a herbal museum, herb gardens and fields and toured this ancient walled city before heading to Assisi to start our next adventure. We stayed overnight at a monastery, marvelled at the Basilica of St. Francis, hiked on a silent pilgrimage to St. Francis of Assisi’s Mountain Retreat, and toured Assisi. We then hiked through ancient beech wood, oak and fir forests on route to the Granducca Mountain Lodge for our
