Yoga in this modern world has unfortunately been misleading whereby acrobatic poses portrayed by media is giving a distorted image of what yoga really is and can be quite intimidating for most. Mea Culpa to all yoga teachers or practitioners displaying similar images on the web to attract people as it contributes to this misconception and clearly a mistake taken that a recent survey shows that in America, only 10% of the population are yoga adept. If it is not for the ego(ok to promote business), it is clearly not to demonstrate the deeper meaning and purpose of what this powerful practice can offer for the body, mind and soul.
I have had the opportunity to meet the lovely Tao Porchon-Lynch this year, the oldest yoga teacher in the world at 97 years of age. She told me, "I teach the real yoga", and I thought to myself, how beautiful is this. In the western world, we seem to get bored quickly and the focus on asanas is prominent although yoga is so much more and can be applied to various and all populations. Don't get me wrong, if you're new to yoga, it's perfectly fine to start with yoga asanas (postures), it will lead you to a deeper journey of healing and self-transformation along the way.
As mentioned in this video, yoga is now at the cutting-edge in the bio medical modern world. Yoga is not just a hobby or something we do here and there, it's real biological stuff, it has the power to heal and prevent illness and keep you healthy as you age.
Yoga can play on your gene activity, enhance gene activity that is good for you (immunity) and reduce the ones that are not (inflammation). Most diseases are not caused by your genetic background but mostly due to stress and lifestyle. We now know with the available technology that yoga not only works on the cellular level but on the molecular level...from brain activity to physiological and subtle energies residing in and around each and everyone of us.
