🔍 The Importance of the Annual General Meeting (AGM)

During AGMs, members of a co-operative elect representatives to sit on the board of directors.
✅ This board defines the major directions of the co-op, makes decisions that impact its future, and hires and supervises an employee to manage daily operations.
✅ The board is responsible for overseeing the management of the co-operative and must report to the members every year at the AGM.

Ken Kavanagh, a retired educator and co-op expert from Bell Island, served as chairman at the Sunrise Funeral Co-operative’s inaugural General Meeting of members on April 2nd in Carbonear.

The co-operative offered a $200 chairing fee, which Mr. Kavanagh chose to donate in full to a charitable cause: The O’Shaughnessy House in Carbonear. A representative from the House attended the meeting to receive the donation.

Congratulations to the newly elected directors of Sunrise Funeral Co-operative!

On April 2nd in Carbonear, the General Assembly of Members elected by acclamation the first regular board of directors in the Co-operative’s history.

The five founding members/incorporators*, who had been serving as the interim board, chose to remain involved. In addition, four new directors were elected, filling all nine positions on the board.

For this historic moment, members of the support teams — the Funeral Co-operatives Network (FCN) and the Newfoundland and Labrador Federation of Co-operatives (NLFC) — were also in attendance. Ken Kavanagh, a co-op expert and facilitator, kindly agreed to serve as chairperson for the meeting.

On April 2nd, 2025, the Sunrise Funeral Co-operative held its inaugural General Meeting of members at Noel’s Funeral Home in Carbonear.

Attendees learned how the first funeral co-operative in the history of Newfoundland and Labrador came into existence. By-laws were adopted, and — of course — the first regular board of directors was elected.

Thank you to everyone who attended, and to those who chose to give their time and energy to serve as directors, truly embodying the values and principles of co-operation! The coming months will be busy with training and further steps toward integrating Noel’s Funeral Homes and Green’s Funeral Home and Services into Sunrise Funeral Co-operative — a not-for-profit organization fully owned and governed by local communities.
