🚑 5 Common First Aid Myths (That Could Actually Make Things Worse)

When an emergency happens, many people rely on things they’ve “always heard.” Unfortunately, some of the most common first aid tips are actually myths. Let’s bust a few of them 👇

❌ Myth #1: Tilt someone’s head back during a nosebleed
✅ Fact: Lean forward, not back. Tilting the head back can cause blood to run down the throat and lead to choking or nausea.

❌ Myth #2: Put butter or oils on burns
✅ Fact: Oils trap heat in the skin. Instead, cool the burn with cool running water for at least 10 minutes.

❌ Myth #3: You should put something in someone’s mouth during a seizure
✅ Fact: Never put anything in their mouth. This can cause injury or choking. Focus on protecting their head and clearing the area.

❌ Myth #4: You should try to “pop” a blister
✅ Fact: Blisters protect the skin underneath from infection. It’s best to leave them intact and cover if needed.

❌ Myth #5: If someone is choking, give them water to wash it down
✅ Fact: Water won’t clear a blocked airway. Proper abdominal thrusts (or back blows) are needed for a severe airway obstruction.

💡 Knowing the right first aid can make the difference between helping and harming.

If you want to feel confident responding in an emergency, our Standard First Aid & CPR-C courses teach practical, hands-on skills you can use in real life.
