Yesterday was dog-mom duty 🐶 🦷

I took Apex to Animal Hospital to see the wonderful Dr. Sparks for an ear infection check… and of course, I somehow still ended up nerding out over teeth.

As a dental hygienist, I couldn’t help but admire the precision. Veterinary dentistry is no joke. Our pets need periodontal care too, and plaque doesn’t discriminate between species.

Friendly reminder:
✔️ Bad breath isn’t “just dog breath”
✔️ Dental disease in dogs can affect systemic health
✔️ Preventive care matters for humans and their four-legged children

Am I eligible to apply for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP)?
To qualify, you can’t have access to private dental insurance.

You are considered as having access to private dental insurance if you are in one of these situation:
- Your job offers you a dental plan (even if you don’t use it, have to pay for it, or have chosen not to enrol)
- You opted out because there was a premium
- You’re covered under your spouse/partner or another family member’s private plan
- You have access to dental coverage through a pension plan (even if it’s limited, if you don’t use it, have to pay for it or if you have chosen not to enrol)
If any of these apply to you, you’re not eligible for the CDCP.

A longtime couple had to reschedule their appointment last month after losing their youngest daughter to breast cancer, leaving behind four children. This week was the first time I had seen them since. I knew there were no words that could truly bring comfort, but empathy and compassion can go a long way. When I arrived, I walked to the door with flowers in hand. The mother answered, and I said softly, “I’m so sorry for your loss,” as I handed her the bouquet. We cried and hugged. Sometimes, it’s the simple acts of kindness and love that bring light to the darkest moments. Compassionate care comes in many different forms.
